Now they’re confiscating alcohol delivered to locked-down Australian apartments if booze volume exceeds state-sanctioned limits

If you’ve had an inkling that the COVID-19 response in one particular Australian state has taken on an Orwellian hue, then the newest reported wrinkle probably won’t shock you.

What now?

In New South Wales — a southeastern state encompassing Sydney — alcohol deliveries to apartments under COVID-19 lockdown are being confiscated if booze volume exceeds limits mandated by the Ministry of Health, news.com.au reported.

The powers that be are enacting daily alcohol limits to “ensure the safety of health staff and residents,” the outlet added.

News.com.au said Mission Australia’s Common Ground building in Camperdown is the latest building where occupants are subjected to such rules — and it should come as no surprise that they don’t like it.

Something dangerous has happened to Australia. We have allowed the interests of ‘collective health’ to erase individual human rights. It has become acceptable to imprison, hurt, fine, intimidate, arrest, segregate, discriminate, oppress, and financially ruin individuals – so long as it is done in the interest of public health. While the personal ethics of our politicians should have prevented a situation like this from arising, Australia has learned that there isn’t a scrap of morality within Parliament, the courts, or the legions of human rights lawyers who show more interest in the wellbeing of terrorists than citizens.
 
The founders of our political system were smarter than this. They built-in structural protections to ensure that every Australian would remain free from the tyrannous whims of deluded ideologues. Contained within our Constitution are assurances of unimpeded travel, the right to work, unrestricted access to public services and spaces, healthcare without prejudice – along with freedom of assembly, association and speech.

‘Emergency’ is a legal status created by politicians – not our founders – to negate these protections. It was designed to deal with rare occasions of chaos when cataclysmic events played out too fast for government to handle: think asteroids, earthquakes, an approaching fire-front, floods, plague of frogs etc.

It’s D-Day for the media when The New York Times, The Guardian, Vanity Fair and the Nine newspapers go into overdrive over what they claim is a plan by News Corp’s Australian tabloids to run a marketing campaign for net zero emissions by 2050. Marketing has more to do with emotion than fact. At much of the climate alarmist media, emotional journalistic responses to climate politics always trump factual analysis of climate science. It’s why the former Fairfax newspapers were so keen on the utterly useless “Earth Hour” climate pose in the noughties.

Outlets excited about the climate campaign story on page one of The Sydney Morning Herald on Monday don’t often report climate science facts. As this column said on August 15 and Holman Jenkins wrote in The Wall Street Journal on September 4, last month’s sixth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change pared back warming claims and gave low probability to the outlier “RCP 8.5” scenario which Extinction Rebellion followers claim will cause havoc within a decade.
