ISTANBUL (ChurchMilitant.com) – Turkey’s top religious official has defended brandishing a “sword of conquest” while delivering his first sermon from Hagia Sophia’s marble pulpit after its conversion into a mosque.

“Preaching in this way [with a sword] sends a message about the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque on the one hand and of conquest on the other,” Ali Erbaş, the country’s head of the Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) defiantly declared Monday.

“Reading sermons with a sword is a common practice in our history and tradition,” Erbaş stated. “When Istanbul was conquered, the first Friday sermon in Hagia Sophia was read with a sword and continued for 481 years,” the religious leader tweeted.

“The tradition of the khutbah (sermon) with the sword has been practiced in some mosques in our country,” he added.

Erbaş held the sword all through his 19-minute sermon on July 24. The sword has three crescents engraved on it representing the three continents that were the object of the Ottoman conquest.

The “conquest verse” from the Koran (48:1) is also inscribed on the sword. It reads: “Indeed, we have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest.”

Two green flags were also hung on the minbar (pulpit) of the mosque as a symbol of conquest.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has said migrants are crossing the Channel to Britain because they believe France is a “racist country” where they may be “tortured”.

According to reports, Ms Patel made her comments in a conference call with Conservative MPs concerned about the recent upsurge in numbers attempting the dangerous voyage in small boats.

Government sources said she had made clear that she did not share those views and was simply explaining the “pull factors” which led so many migrants to risk their lives in this way.

The federal government is forwarding the names of all Australians who have applied for permission to leave the country during the coronavirus pandemic to Border Force, the agency normally responsible for dealing with deadbeat parents trying to flee the country owing child support or in defiance of custody orders. Shocked Australian citizens have told The Australian about “alarming” letters they have received from the Department of Home Affairs after applying for an exemption to travel abroad to visit sick relatives, take up scholarships or join family abroad.

The letters say their names and passport details have been forwarded to all international departure points and Border Force, a process that triggers an alarm at the airport if they try to leave.

Australia is the only democracy in the world with an outbound travel ban, which prevents citizens from leaving without an exemption from a bureaucrat. The process has been described as arbitrary and secretive by dis­appointed travellers and they have been told there are no grounds for appeal. The EU, Canada, Britain and New Zealand let their citizens leave the country provided they quarantine upon return.

Australians must apply for a permit, which is granted only in exceptional circumstances. The vast majority of applications — up to 75 per cent — are being denied.
