Celebrity Big Brother star Jermaine Jackson hopes to convert brother Michael to Islam.

Jermaine told the BBC Asian Network that his Muslim faith helped him cope with life inside the Big Brother house.

“If I didn’t have Allah and my prayer rug, I would not have survived, and the reason why is because it kept me focused, it kept me calm,” said the former Jackson Five singer, who now lives in Bahrain.

“Michael, I feel, needs to become a Muslim because I think it’s a great protection for him from all the things that he’s been attacked with, which are false. There’s a strength and a protection there.

“I brought him a lot of books, and he reads everything and he reads a lot.

“I think he’s probably given it serious thought because he’s spent a lot of time in Bahrain. I was the reason why he had gone there because I wanted him to get out of America and just go somewhere peaceful and quiet, where people pray five times a day. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Jermaine, who came second in the Channel 4 reality show, also denied branding Jade Goody, Jo O’Meara and Danielle Lloyd “white trash”.

He said: “I didn’t make that statement. I was repeating something that someone else had said and I was trying to let Shilpa know what some of the house mates felt was the reason why she was attacked. They didn’t show who originally said it.

Taxi Council of SA chief executive Peter Johns said yesterday his organisation was considering a proposal that recent immigrants hold an unconditional licence for at least a year before being permitted to drive for a living.

“We are talking to multicultural organisations . . . so we can get better information to (drivers). They have to be aware of the Australian way of life,” he said.

A SUDANESE refugee who committed three rapes in a three-day spree of violence just a month after he arrived in Australia was sentenced today to 24 years in jail.

The Victorian Supreme Court was told that Hakeem Hakeem, 21, committed the crimes – including rape and false imprisonment – in March 2005, a month after arriving in Australia.

The crime spree, which occurred in Dandenong, in Melbourne’s outer southeast, started with the rape of a 16-year-old girl at a scout hall on March 10.

The next day Hakeem broke into the home of another woman, raping and bashing her so severely that she was in hospital for 11 days, the court was told.

On March 12, Hakeem attacked a young couple at the same scout hall where the first rape took place, forcing them to have sex in front of him.

He also raped the female victim.

Justice Murray Kellam told the court the offences that Hakeem carried out were serious.

“You raped three women in a period of three days in violent and frightening circumstances,” Justice Kellam said.

“You did not respond to any threat, rather you found your victims in their own private spaces and imposed your violence and sexual lust upon them,” Justice Kellam said.

Justice Kellam sentenced Hakeem to 24 years in jail, with a non-parole period of 17 years.

That makes him 38 when he gets out. He will do it again…

EILAT, Israel (Reuters) – A Palestinian suicide bomber killed three people in a bakery in the Red Sea resort of Eilat, one of Israel’s most popular holiday spots, in the first such attack in the Jewish state in nine months, police said.

Islamic Jihad, al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and the previously unknown “Army of Believers” claimed joint responsibility for the bombing.

The attack — the first time Eilat has been hit by a suicide bombing — came four days before the so-called Quartet of Middle East peace negotiators was to meet in Washington as part of a renewed effort to revive Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.

Islamic Jihad and the Aqsa brigades said the bombing was a response to Israeli “attempts to defile al-Aqsa mosque” in Jerusalem, a reference to recent archaeological excavations. Israeli officials said the work had not damaged the shrine.

The blast tore through the “Lechamim” bakery in a residential neighbourhood far from a strip of beach hotels. Loaves of bread, still on trays, lay on the blood-stained pavement outside.

“I saw a man with a black coat and a bag. For Eilat, where it is hot, it is strange to see someone walking with a coat. I said to myself, ‘Why is this idiot dressed that way?’ Seconds later, I heard a huge blast. The building shook,” Benny Mazgini, a local resident, told Israel Radio.

The identities of the victims were not released.

I very much hope the film has message different to the one Hammond suggests, but given that it’s been handed $51,000 of government grants makes me fear it’s exactly as advertised.

A growing minority of young Muslims are inspired by political Islam and feel they have less in common with non-Muslims than their parents do, a survey reveals today. The poll, carried out for the conservative-leaning Policy Exchange think tank, found support for Sharia law, Islamic schools and wearing the veil in public is significantly stronger among young Muslims than their parents.

In the survey of 1,003 Muslims by the polling company Populus through internet and telephone questionnaires, nearly 60% said they would prefer to live under British law, while 37% of 16 to 24-year-olds said they would prefer sharia law, against 17% of those over 55. Eighty-six per cent said their religion was the most important thing in their lives.

Nearly a third of 16 to 24-year-olds believed that those converting to another religion should be executed, while less than a fifth of those over 55 believed the same. The survey claimed that British authorities and some Muslim groups have exaggerated the problem of Islamophobia and fuelled a sense of victim hood among some Muslims: 84% said they believed they had been well treated in British society, though only 28% thought the authorities had gone over the top in trying not to offend Muslims. Munira Mirza, a doctoral student at Kent University who wrote the report, said: “The government should engage with Muslims as citizens, not through their religious identity.”

A ROW has erupted over Muslim-only washrooms at La Trobe University that can be accessed only with a secret push-button code.

Muslim students have exclusive access to male and female washrooms on campus, sparking claims of bias and discrimination.

The university and Islamic leaders have defended the washrooms as vital to Muslim students’ prayer rituals.

A university student, who did not want to be identified, raised the issue with the Sunday Herald Sun this week.

Australian Family Council spokesman Bill Muehlenberg said concerns over the exclusive facilities were valid.

“Do we have a Christian washroom or an atheist washroom?” he said. “The whole thing is madness.”

Mr Muehlenberg said the separate facilities were divisive.

“If Muslims are saying ‘we are good Australians and want to integrate’, why are they insisting on separate washrooms?” he said.

Victorian Muslim community leader Yasser Soliman said the washrooms were necessary.

He said the separate facilities were also due to concerns from non-Muslim students.

“Muslims need to wash their feet before prayer and in the past there have been complaints about them washing their feet in sinks, so this is a happy medium,” he said.

Mr Soliman said most universities provided Muslim-only prayer and washrooms for students.

He said the university also had a Christian chapel with a meeting room and four chaplains from major denominations had offices.

How to make trouble for moderate Muslims with noisy “tolerance” for the extremists:

A ROW has erupted over Muslim-only washrooms at La Trobe University that can be accessed only with a secret push-button code.

What possible reason could there be for going to this expense in dividing Muslim students from everyone else, reinforcing the unhelpful notion that the two are so dangerously different?

“Muslims need to wash their feet before prayer and in the past there have been complaints about them washing their feet in sinks, so this is a happy medium,” he said.

Let’s pretend we actually believe Soliman. Solution: Just put up notices explaining the feet-washing. Or install a separate sink in the communal toilets, at a handy foot-washing height.

But insist all faiths share the same toilets. If we can’t even share them…

Federal Attorney-General Phillip Ruddock has rejected calls to ban the controversial Islamic group, Hizb ut Tahrir, which has been holding a conference in south-west Sydney today.

The meeting focused on the creation of an Islamic state somewhere in the world, with full Sharia law.

(Translation: ‘Somewhere’ means we start in Australia)

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma says Australia should follow the lead of Europe and parts of the Middle East in banning the group.

But Mr Ruddock says there is insufficient evidence to proscribe Hizb ut Tahrir as a terrorist organisation.

“I regard their message as being an unacceptable one in a pluralist society like ours,” he said.

“But just because people have messages that I don’t regard as broadly in keeping with Australian values, doesn’t mean they can be proscribed as terrorist organisations.”

Delusion?

Federal Opposition immigration spokesman Tony Bourke says the Federal Government should have considered denying a visa to the conference’s main speaker, Indonesian Ismail Yusanto, because he has been quoted as wanting to impose Sharia law in the west.

Mr Ruddock says Hizb ut Tahrir is being monitored but its activities in Australia do not warrant banning it.

(Translation: We wait for them to bomb us and then we’ll get tough, otherwise we miss out on trade with the ME)

Today, Dr Yusanto told about 500 people gathered in Lakemba that the members of an Islamic state would have to be prepared for jihad, or holy war, to defend it.

“It is important… [to move] collectively in the Muslim world to demand this change from such influential people in our lands, even if it means spilling onto the streets to create a revolution or staging a military coup,” he said.

(‘Our lands’ means all the lands on earth, because everything in this world belongs to Allah and his religion, and infidels have no place in it)
