KABUL — Taliban fighters attacked a detachment of German troops who were on a bridge-building and mine-clearing mission, triggering a gunbattle that left three soldiers dead, the German Defense Ministry said.
Five other Germans were wounded in the fighting Friday southwest of Kunduz city, the ministry said.

“When they cut off my nose and ears, I passed out,” 19-year-old Bibi Aisha of Afghanistan says with chilling candor.
Her beauty is still stunning and her confidence inspiring. It takes a moment for the barbaric act committed against her to register in your mind and sight.
Wearing her patterned scarf and with roughly painted nails she shares her story.
“It felt like there was cold water in my nose, I opened my eyes and I couldn’t even see because of all the blood,” she remembers.
It was an act of Taliban justice for the crime of shaming her husband’s family.
This story began when Aisha was just 8 years old.
Her father had promised her hand in marriage, along with that of her baby sister’s, to another family in a practice called “baad.”

Nor do fanciful re-translations of the Arabic term. There can be no meaningful discussion of domestic violence in the Muslim world without acknowledging that Islam’s scriptures, believed to be the direct word of Allah, approve of the idea of resorting to violence to “control” supposedly disobedient women.
As for Muhammad, he was a wife-beater himself, as Aisha recounts in this hadith that “He struck me on the chest which caused me pain.” When, per Qur’an 33:21, a man who marries a child and beats her is your “beautiful pattern of conduct,” you’ve got a serious problem.

Today’s the day for women in Afghanistan to don their bright blue burqas, obtain the services of male companions, and head off to Herat to take part in International Women’s Day.
Thousands showed up for the gala event where they were treated to readings from the Koran and assurance from imams that they will remain subservient to males under the Karzai government, although they might (if they are beyond their child-bearing years) obtain permission to work in the poppy fields.
Hillary Clinton, who championed the event, failed to make an appearance in her latest hijab, and Michelle Obama, who expressed her concern for the plight of Afghan women, was nowhere in sight (unless, of course, she was concealed by her black burqa).

There was a reason why Obama refused to show the world the pictures that were taken in the torture camps of Iraq and Afghanistan – rape. The rape of men, women and, most shocking of all, young children in front of their parents. This was reported by a number of sources including Seymour Hersh and later from even more sources. In the Washington Post report, one detainee, Kasim Hilas, describes the rape of an Iraqi boy by a man in uniform, whose name has been blacked-out of the statement, but who appears to be a translator working for the army.
The utterly wrongheaded policy that has American troops in Afghanistan devoting the bulk of their time to hearts-and-minds initiatives and to behaving like social workers is…killing American troops. When America pretends to have no enemies, its enemies do not fall into line and behave accordingly. And yet Americans are not allowed to fight back.

There should be a full-scale investigation of this in Washington. But there won’t be, because most pols on both sides of the aisle still assume that it would be terrible to stop trying to be buddies to the Afghans and to fight a traditional war. They think we can actually win, i.e., create a stable and secure Afghanistan, by not fighting. Their naivete is probably incurable.
Someday, civilian and military leaders responsible for these rules of engagement, this policy of sacrificing American troops to make the barbarians of Afghanistan “like us” should come before at the very least a Congressional hearing, but at this point an out-for-blood people’s tribunal seems more appropriate. What they are doing to our military, our treasury, our power and our prestige is an unconscionable national betrayal.

As I have pointed out many, many times, there is no reliable way to distinguish a peaceful Muslim from a potentially violent jihadist. It isn’t as if there is one sect of Islam that has renounced and rejected violent jihad and Islamic supremacism, and another that upholds such things. If that were the case, one could rely on the peaceful group and shun the group that taught violence. But contrary to popular belief, every mainstream Islamic sect and school of Islamic law teaches the necessity to subjugate unbelievers, by force if necessary, under the hegemony of Islamic law. The U.S. government, of course, denies this fact and bases numerous policies upon the assumption that the vast majority of Muslims share universally accepted notions of human rights, and abhor jihad terrorism. This is the fruit of that false assumption.

Two US soldiers who died in eastern Afghanistan on Friday were shot dead by an interpreter, it has emerged.A Nato official said the translator gunned down the US soldiers before other soldiers shot him dead at an outpost in Wardak province.
A US military official told Reuters news agency the attacker seemed to be a “disgruntled employee”, not a militant….
Oh, well, then it’s OK.
An Afghan provincial official told Reuters the interpreter had argued with the soldiers over pay and treatment, before opening fire.
I once had a job in which I was disgruntled over pay and treatment. Oddly enough, I never opened fire.

With great fanfare but little grit or talk of victory, President Obama announced at West Point last month that 30,000 additional American soldiers are going to Afghanistan. If the mission in Afghanistan is two-fold, the defeat of the abysmal Taliban and the creation of a stable, democratic state, it would appear that we are not doing well.
The same could be said of “nation building” in Iraq, where violence of late appears to be diminishing in comparison to the bloody mountains and valleys of Afghanistan. While the reduction of violence in Iraq is comforting, the diminishment of violence is not the definitive measure of the success of nation building.
The true measure of our efforts in both beneficiary countries should be based upon an examination of the foundations of these countries that we have created with the blood of our best and treasure. When such an examination is made the result can only be horror.
The constitutions of Iraq and Afghanistan – for those who love democracy, freedom, and liberty – are failures. If the constitution of a new nation is a failure, then what kind of nation can be built upon it?
