Islamophobia in New York City: Muslim cabbie runs over two of his passengers

There have been several other suspicious incidents involving Muslim drivers over the last few years. Hassan Daly, a 52-year-old described as a “devout Muslim,” plowed his cab into a crowd on a sidewalk in San Diego, injuring over 24 people. Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar explicitly grounded his hit-and-run in the teachings of the Koran. Munir Muthana told the police who arrested him that “the Muslims will fix this country.”Omeed Aziz Popal, we were told, was suffering from stress from an arranged marriage. Ismail Yassin Mohamed, we were informed, was mentally ill, suffered from depression, and hadn’t being taking his medication. And Muhammad Teshale, according to “law enforcement officials,” “did it to be famous.”

Coincidence or jihad? Certainly there are a lot of hit-and-run and incidents involving people hit by cars that have nothing to do with Muslims, but in the cases listed here there is a degree of intentionality in these that we do not usually see.

Note that Zogby is writing this in a Paki paper. Pakistan is almost entirely Muslim. There is no “Islamophobia” there, and Muslims experience no alienation. And yet jihad activity is quite common there. Now, why is that?    (Zogby’s imaginary Islamophobia /read it all)

The details are murky and disputed, but here are the basic facts: “Taxi Plows Into Crowd in San Diego,” from FoxNews.com, February 12:

SAN DIEGO — A taxi cab driver plowed slowly into a crowd on a sidewalk in San Diego’s busy Gaslamp District early Saturday, injuring more than two dozen people, police said.The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the crash occurred about 2 a.m. in the middle of the popular restaurant and nightclub zone, close to the city’s convention center….

The driver’s name was not released right away (why not?); he turned out to be Sam Hassan Daly, a 52-year-old Muslim.

George Herridge, 73, a retired hospital maintenance manager, told the Daily Mail he was ‘stunned’ to be twice asked by bus drivers to leave their vehicles because of his guide dog Andy, a black Labrador.

Mr Herridge, who lives with wife Janet, 69, in Tilehurst, Reading, said that on the first occasion two years ago, he got off at the request of a Muslim driver because some Muslim children on board were ‘screaming’ because of the dog.

He found himself in a similar scenario in May last year, when a Muslim woman and her children became ‘hysterical’.

Well, they are terrifying

The Daily Telegraph‘s Sarrah Le Marquand – not exactly a right-wing culture warrior – joins Virginia Haussegger and Elizabeth Farrelly in opposing Islam’s freedom sack:

There is something profoundly disturbing about women having to cover their faces.

What is there to celebrate in a garment designed to strip its wearer of her identity? An item that suggests only by fully shielding herself can a woman feel free to venture outside without illiciting unwanted attention from men. A piece of clothing that seeks to reinforce the apparent subservience of one half of the population.

You can spin it however you want – and plenty have tried – but it remains a symbol of oppression, pure and simple.

A LEGALLY blind woman was refused entry to a taxi unless she put her guide dog in the boot.

Sarah Eady was upset when she was told her guide dog would have to ride in the boot.

The incident outside Central Station in Sydney last week highlighted an ongoing problem for vision-impaired commuters that laws are failing to fix.

About 35 per cent of all people with guide dogs have been refused entry to a taxi in the past 12 months, despite hefty fines for cabbies who fail to comply.

Sydney woman Sarah Eady said she was at Central Railway’s taxi rank on Thursday when a driver refused to let her five-year-old guide dog Ally into the front seat.

“I opened the door and he said ‘Can you sit in the back with the dog’ and I told him the dog was trained to sit in the front,” she said.

“He said he didn’t want the dog in the front and then he asked me to put Ally in the boot.”

Ms Eady said she was often refused entry to taxis because of her dog.

Oslo taxi drivers protesting against the drawing of the Muhammad cartoons

A thousand taxi drivers of Muslim background interrupted their work late Friday, early Saturday moring in protest of the Oslo-Prophet Muhammad cartoons.
The Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, released on Wednesday one of the illustrations on its front page.
Spontaneous demonstration was launched on Friday evening, and urged the busy men behind the wheel to park their cars during the period of two and four o’clock. According to police, the protest went peacefully.
Dagbladet used the drawings to illustrate a story, according to which the security police PST’s website has a link to the infamous cartoon images that have given rise to such bad blood. In the drivers’ view, the publication of the picture, was once again unnecessary.

A large number of Oslo taxi drivers already have been charged with tax evasion and welfare fraud. Now Oslo police suspect around 40 drivers and even more taxi owners of having close contact with Pakistani gangs, and operating as couriers of arms and drugs.

A Sydney cabbie who raped three female passengers is an “honest, caring person who would not harm a soul”, a judge has been told.

Fatima Kazan also said her brother-in-law, Hassan Nagi, was “very, very sorry” for his offences.

She was giving evidence in the Downing Centre District Court on Wednesday at the sentencing hearing for 37-year-old Nagi, of Bexley.

Nagi has pleaded guilty to raping three women, aged 31, 23 and 27, in 2003, 2006 and 2007.

Ms Kazan said she had known Nagi for 10 years and had been shocked to learn of his crimes, adding, “This was out of his character, this is not him.”

She saw her brother-in-law daily. “He is always crying, he is always depressed.”

His lawyer handed up to Judge James Bennett a bundle of material, including “confidential submissions”.

The hearing is continuing.

Police being sued for defamation over questioning suspects

THREE men questioned by police on Sydney streets are suing the New South Wales Government, saying the officers made defamatory comments about them within earshot of passers-by.

Alleged statements such as “we are stopping you because you guys were … intending to steal” could cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars and restrict the way police conduct routine investigations, The Australian reports. 

The NSW Government recently tried to have the men’s cases thrown out of court.However, a NSW District Court judge not only gave the two separate cases the go-ahead, but ordered the Government to pay the men’s legal costs. 

Payouts of up to $250,000 can be awarded if comments are found to be defamatory.

Thirty-seven-year-old Hassan Nagi was charged with raping the women between 2003 and 2007 at Glebe, Kings Cross and Kogarah.
