If recent reports of trends in religious observance prove to be correct, then in some 30 years the mosque will be able to claim that, religiously speaking, the UK is an Islamic nation, and therefore needs a share in any religious establishment to reflect this. The progress of conservative Islam in the UK has been amazing, and it has come at a time of prolonged decline in church attendance that seems likely to continue.This progress has been enthusiastically assisted by this government in particular with its hard-line multi-cultural dogma and willingness to concede to virtually every demand made by Muslims. Perhaps most importantly the government has chosen to allow hard-liners to act as representing all Muslims, and more liberal Muslims have almost completely failed to produce any leadership voices to compete, leading many Britons to wonder if there are indeed many liberal Muslims at all, surely a mistake.

Surely!

At all levels of national life Islam has gained state funding, protection from any criticism, and the insertion of advisors and experts in government departs national and local. A Muslim Home Office adviser, for example, was responsible for Baroness Scotland’s aborting of the legislation against honour killings, arguing that informal methods would be better. In the police we hear of girls under police protection having the addresses of their safe houses disclosed to their parents by Muslim officers who think they are doing their religious duty. While men-only gentlemen’s clubs are now being dubbed unlawful, we hear of municipal swimming baths encouraging ‘Muslim women only’ sessions and in Dewsbury Hospitals staff waste time by turning beds to face Mecca five times a day — a Monty Pythonesque scenario of lunacy, but astonishingly true. Prisons are replete with imams who are keen to inculcate conservative Islam in any inmates who are deemed to be culturally ‘Muslim’: the Prison service in effect treats such prisoners as a cultural block to be preached to by imams at will. Would the Prison service send all those with ‘C of E’ on their papers to confirmation classes with the chaplain?! We could go on.

The point is that Islam is being institutionalised, incarnated, into national structures amazingly fast, at the same time as demography is showing very high birthrates. Charles Taylor’s new and classic work on the Secular Age charts the rise of the secular mindset and what he calls the ‘excarnation’ of Christianity as it is levered out of state policy and structures. Christianity is now regarded as bad news, the liberal elite’s attack developed in the 1960s took root in the educationalist empire, and to some extent even in areas of the church.

Today the Christian story is fading from public imagination, while Islam grows apace. There needs to be some fresh thinking in this area where the claims of Christ are sensitively explained. Our church leaders must develop ways of explaining this, as our feature on mission and evangelism this week demonstrates.

Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs Laurie Ferguson yesterday expressed alarm over anti-Islamic xenophobia in the area, saying that while the council may have rejected the development proposal on genuine planning grounds, some in the local community had displayed racism. “You’ve got a community there with very few Muslims in the immediate area. There’s lack of knowledge, lack of interface connection and basic ignorance coming into it,” Mr Ferguson said. “What happened out there does show … we need to work with this council to erode this kind of bigotry in that community.”

Camden Council unanimously rejected the proposal to build the 1200-student Islamic school on Tuesday night, at a meeting attended by 200 locals, some of whom hailed the decision as a victory against Islamic radicalism.

The community mobilised against the proposal after the Qu’ranic Society Dar Tahfez El-Quran lodged its plan with council last year.

Mr Ferguson said the council had made recent approaches to receive federal funding to run programs to help the community’s knowledge about multiculturalism. “There was a part of the campaign which was based on anti-Islamic xenophobia and that’s pretty worrying. These people should worry that when they start complaining about treatment of people overseas, including Christian minorities in the Middle East … this is a bit hypocritical,” he said.

“It’s a bit hypocritical for us to say we are concerned about some Middle Eastern countries’ restrictions on building Christian churches and restrictions on seminarians being trained if we in Australia start campaigns that schools shouldn’t be built because they are Islamic.”

* How’s that? Because Islamic countries forbid Christian churches and seminaries we are hypocritical because we don’t want to see mosques and madrassahs on every corner in Australian country towns and the cities? Laurie, have you ever heard of reciprocity?

Education Minister Julia Gillard avoided the debate yesterday. “This was obviously dealt with as a planning matter by the local council. It’s the subject of NSW planning laws and should be dealt with in that way through the planning process,” she said.

Camden mayor Chris Patterson said the decision was based on concerns over the effect on traffic flows, not on religious grounds. But he welcomed the Government’s interest in helping to change community attitudes.

“We would encourage the federal Government to get involved,” he said. “We need to involve representatives from the federal Government to find out what help they can provide on this issue. They are the minority but any racism or nationalism cannot be tolerated.”

Mosque hearing rally cry

A DUDLEY councillor is calling on the people of the town to “create crowds” outside Dudley Council House as the future of the mosque is discussed inside.

For two days in June (10 and 11) the planning inspectorate from Bristol will be holding a public inquiry as to whether the council were right to refuse the application made by the Dudley Muslim Association last year.

The council’s development control committee unanimously rejected the proposals after the project received opposition via petitions with more than 22,000 names.

A senior figure within Australia’s Islamic community has warned that the blocking of a proposed Muslim school in Camden could result in Islamic children being taught extreme religious views in “backyards and garages”.

Australian Federation of Islamic Councils president Ikebal Patel said it was “very sad” that Camden Council last night rejected a proposal to build a school for 1200 students on planning grounds.

In announcing the decision the Mayor, Chris Patterson, stressed that the refusal of the application had nothing to do with the seething religious tensions that have underpinned much of the debate.

He later told AAP he encouraged the school’s developers to resubmit their proposal if they could find an alternative site within his south-western Sydney municipality.

But Mr Patel said he was saddened by the attitudes of Camden residents, some of whom declared the rejection of the school plan a victory for “decency”.

“It’s very, very distressing that that sort of phobia exists in the community,” Mr Patel said.

“I think what the [Camden] council and the general population have to realise is that if Islamic schools are not encouraged and allowed to be established under the auspices of the State Government and their oversight, the same Muslim children will be given their religious education in backyards and garages by Imams and other religious teachers whose credentials no-one could vet.

“You may have some very extreme Imams or religious teachers getting through to the children.”

* Really? Then the question should be: what are we going to do about that? Monitor the mosques and the schools or do away with them altogether?

Mr Patel said he supported the proposed developers, the Quranic Society Dar Tahfez El-Quran, who have declared their intention to fight for the school.

* Of course. Patel wouldn’t be a proper soldier of Allah if he wasn’t prepared to take it to the limit…

Vice-president Issam Obeid told the Camden Advertiser: “We’re definitely going to appeal through the Land and Environment Court.”

Another member of the society, Ahmed Halal, told the paper it was disappointing that Camden residents had made it clear they did not want Muslims in the area.

“If you build a school, then you’re building education and you’re building something for society,” he said.

About 200 Camden residents cheered wildly as the council formally decided to reject the application in their area last night.

Dressed in a hat decorated with Australian flags and a long yellow dress, a resident, Kate McCulloch, emerged from the meeting hailing the decision and insisting that Muslims were incompatible with the local community.

“The ones that come here oppress our society, they take our welfare and they don’t want to accept our way of life,” she said.

A council report recommended that the application be refused after more than 3000 submissions had been received from the public. The vast majority opposed the development.

Cr Patterson pointed to a report from council officers showing the proposed development was flawed on environmental and planning grounds. These included inadequate public transport to the site, in Burragorang Road at Cawdor, and fears that it might be contaminated by hazardous materials. Cr Patterson insisted the ruling was “on planning grounds alone”.

A TEENAGE motorist was told to remove an England flag from his car by a police officer because it could be offensive to immigrants.

Ben Smith, 18, was driving back home to Ingram Road in Melksham on Thursday evening after filling up with petrol, when the officer stopped him on a routine patrol.

He checked the tax disc and tyres on his Vauxhall Corsa but when he noticed the flag of St George on the parcel shelf he told Mr Smith to take it down.

Mr Smith, who works for G Plan Upholsterers on Hampton Park West, said: “He saw the flag and said it was racist towards immigrants and if I refused to take it down I would get a £30 fine.

“I laughed because I thought he was joking, but then I realised he was serious so I had to take it down straight away. I thought it was silly – it’s my country and I want to show my support for my country.”
