Not only have Egypt’s ulema “condoned Obama’s decision to visit Cairo next month and to address the Arab and Muslim world from that city,” but they are inviting him to do it from Al-Azhar, the world’s most authoritative Sunni institution, which, incidentally, permits suicide-bombings. “Egyptian Mufti Invites Obama to Address Muslims from Al-Azhar Mosque,” from MEMRI, May 10:

Egyptian Mufti Dr. ‘Ali Gum’a and other Al-Azhar scholars have condoned Obama’s decision to visit Cairo next month and to address the Arab and Muslim world from that city, and have invited him to give his address from the Al-Azhar mosque. Dr. Gum’a stated that this would promote a culture of dialogue between Islam and the West.

This is, of course, an extremely controversial verse, and many Islamic spokesmen and others in the West deny that it has anything to do with wife-beating, so it is worth noting how several translators render the key word here, وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ, waidriboohunna.

Pickthall: “and scourge them”
Yusuf Ali: “(And last) beat them (lightly)”
Al-Hilali/Khan: “(and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful)”
Shakir: “and beat them”
Sher Ali: “and chastise them”
Khalifa: “then you may (as a last alternative) beat them”
Arberry: “and beat them”
Rodwell: “and scourge them”
Sale: “and chastise them”
Asad: “then beat them”

Laleh Bakhtiar, in a new translation that has received wide publicity, translates it as “go away from them.” However, in light of this unanimity among the translators, both Muslim and non-Muslim, this seems difficult to sustain – all of these authorities got the passage wrong until Bakhtiar? But her impulse is understandable, as many Muslims today regard this verse with acute embarrassment. Muhammad Asad adduces numerous traditions in which Muhammad “forbade the beating of any woman,” concluding that wife-beating is “barely permissible, and should preferably be avoided.”

Bahrain: Rape of Air Hostess Results in Job loss

A BRITISH woman allegedly raped by two men within days of arriving in Bahrain claims she has since lost her job as a result.   

The 23-year-old said she spent a night locked in a room after being raped by Jordanian and Moroccan men last month.

However, she insists she was forced out of the airline’s cabin crew training programme after authorities chose not to pursue her rape allegations – even though a boss of the two accused reportedly tried to pay her off.

The woman also claims police delays meant it was over a week before she had a medical test, adding that Gulf Air had already sent two of the key witnesses – also cabin crew trainees – home after terminating their training.

Hamas: We won’t accept two-state solution

_250_mashalapThe Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas will not accept a two-state solution as a means to end the conflict with Israel, the movement’s Damascus-based politburo chief Khaled Meshal said Saturday.

Meshal said that Hamas rejects the two-state solution but could still be part of a national unity government if a Palestinian state is established based on 1967 borders.
Meshal told the New York Times last week that Hamas has agreed with the rival Fatah movement to a state based on 1967 borders, including East Jerusalem, the dismantling of settlements and a right of return for Palestinians. He said such a deal could be the basis for a long-lasting ceasefire. Some analysts saw the remarks as an indirect recognition of Israel.

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, will continue its dialogue with Fatah in Cairo on May 16. The goal is the formation of a national government.

Stealth jihad in action: when Islamic law and Western customs conflict, in a Western country, which will have to give way? And what precedent will be set by the endless accommodation of Islamic rules and sensibilities? Either someone at some point will have the courage to call a halt and say that there will be no more accommodation of Islamic law at the expense of British custom and law, or the demands and accommodations will continue until the UK becomes a Sharia state.

Police Officer Arrested for attacks on police at Berlin's May Day Riot

During the May Day protests last week, Berlin police clashed with nearly every kind of demonstrator imaginable — including one of their own. An off-duty police officer from Frankfurt has been arrested for stone-throwing during riots which left over 450 of his colleagues injured.

This year’s May Day riots proved to be a serious headache for the roughly 6,000 police officers on duty in Berlin last Friday. Over 450 of them — four times as many as last year — reported injuries, with 19 requiring out-patient hospital care, Berlin police chief Dieter Glietsch reported.

Adding insult to injury is the news that one of the 289 protestors police arrested during the violence was actually one of their own — a fellow officer with the German Federal Police.
