Sri Lanka Mulls Burqa Ban as Easter Jihad Death Toll Rises to 321

Sri Lanka may be considering joining a growing number of governments in banning the burqa, an Islamic head covering that leaves no part of a woman’s body visible, local media reported Tuesday in the aftermath of the series of suspected jihadist bombings targeting Christians on Easter Sunday.

Officials confirmed Tuesday that the death toll had risen a second time from 290 to 321 as some severely wounded died overnight and forensic specialists began identifying the dismembered remains strewn throughout three churches and three hotels in and around the nation’s capital, Colombo.

Police also told reporters Tuesday they arrested 40 individuals suspected of participating in planning and executing the attack. Law enforcement officials believe a Sri Lankan radical Islamic group, National Thowheeth Jama’ath, conducted the bombings.

Sri Lanka Minister: Easter Bombings A Response To New Zealand Mosque Attacks

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka’s state minister of defense said Tuesday that the Easter attack on churches, hotels and other sites in the South Asian nation was “carried out in retaliation” for the shooting massacre at two New Zealand mosques last month, according to a statement.

The minister, Ruwan Wijewardene, told Parliament the government possessed information that the series of bombings in and outside of Colombo that killed more than 300 people were carried out “by an Islamic fundamentalist group” in response to the Christchurch attacks. He did not provide evidence of explain the source of the information.

Wijewardene blamed “weakness” within Sri Lanka’s security apparatus for failing to prevent the nine bombings at churches, luxury hotels and other sites.

“By now it has been established that the intelligence units were aware of this attack and a group of responsible people were informed about the impending attack,” he said. “However, this information has been circulated among only a few officials.”

As Sri Lanka’s leaders wrangled the aftermath of an apparent homegrown militant attack and massive intelligence failure, security was heightened Tuesday for a national day of mourning and the military was employing powers to make arrests it last used when the devastating civil war ended in 2009.

A Christian apologist from the United States was banned by Facebook recently after he shared a screenshot of a death threat he received from a Muslim.

David Wood, founder of Acts 17 Apologetics Ministry, posted a video on YouTube this week, accusing the social media giant of repeatedly banning him on “completely bogus charges.”

Facebook accused Wood of violating Community Standards on multiple occasions. One violation included posting a famous historic photograph of Adolf Hitler’s meeting with the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, for which Wood copped a three-day ban.

Hours after the ban was lifted, Facebook accused Wood of violating Community Standards again, temporarily banning him for a further 7 days. This time, for a link Wood shared FOUR-YEARS earlier, containing a screenshot of a death threat he’d received from a Muslim.

Wood was then banned again for violating Community Standards after he shared a historic photograph of a man who refused to give the Nazi salute. “Be this guy,” Wood said in the caption.

Churches Desecrated in Ongoing Attacks Across Europe

Across Europe, there has been a growing rise in attacks on churches. Countries like France and Germany have seen a spike in violent vandalism, desecrating cherished churches and Christian symbols in recent months and years.

According to the German news site PI-News, every day in France, two churches are desecrated. They report 1,063 attacks on Christian churches or symbols like crucifixes, icons, and statues in France in 2018, marking a 17 percent increase from the year before.

The Middle East Forum reports that attacks on Catholic churches in France since the start of the year have included smashed statues, broken crosses, and demolished tabernacles.

Expressing deepest condolences to all Catholic and Christians in the country, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader Rauff Hakeem and All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Leader Rishad Bathiudeen yesterday stressed that neither Islam nor Muslims by no means will ever endorse such heinous crimes and condemned the coward attacks on Easter Sunday in the strongest possible terms.

Addressing media at Temple Trees yesterday the Ministers assured Muslim community’s fullest cooperation to bring the terrorism to an end.

“We are outraged and deeply saddened by the lives lost by Catholic and Christian brothers and injured. While we are shocked and dismayed at the scale of these incidents, it shows that those were deliberate, well-planned and sophisticated bomb blasts in every occasion. We are demanding proper answers must be given by all those who are responsible for what has happened and we will fully corporate to assist in these investigations and bring this to an end,” Hakeem said.

Suicide bombers targeted three churches, three luxury hotels, and a guesthouse, with authorities finding and disposing of another explosive at the airport later the same day.

Officials in Sri Lanka continued to block the nation’s access to social media Monday; fearing more bloodshed after ‘Islamist militants’ launched a series of bombings across the country on Easter Sunday that claimed the lives of nearly 300 people.

“Sri Lankan officials believe an Islamist militant group was behind the Easter morning attacks on churches and luxury hotels that killed at least 290 people and wounded another 500, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne told reporters,” reports the Wall Street Journal.
