PARIS (AP) – French lawmakers have approved a measure that is intended to force search engines and social networks to take hate speech off the internet.

The measure adopted Thursday by the lower house of the French parliament would require social networks to remove hate speech within 24 hours of a confirmed violation. Search engines would have to stop referencing the content as well.

The provision, part of a bill on internet regulation, targets videos or messages inciting or glorifying terrorism, hate, violence, or racist or religious abuse. Violators could face hefty fines.

It prompted heated discussion in the National Assembly over how to define hate speech.

French President Emmanuel Macron proposed such a law earlier this year amid an uptick in anti-Semitic incidents in France and concerns about increasing extremist language online.

Italian migrant transport NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans has launched a new vessel into the Mediterranean following the confiscation of their other ship.

The new ship, the Alex, set sail this week to the area off the coast of Libya known as the SAR (search and rescue) zone with the head of the group declaring that the vessel will pick up illegal immigrants and take them to Italian ports, Il Giornale reports.

Tommy Robinson is appearing at the Old Bailey to face contempt of court proceedings over allegations he breached reporting restrictions on a criminal trial.

The 36-year-old former leader of the English Defence League was initially jailed for 13 months in May 2018 after he filmed a Facebook Live broadcast outside the case in Leeds.

He was freed on appeal but attorney general Geoffrey Cox said there were “strong grounds” for new proceedings against Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

A homeless migrant from Afghanistan was arrested over the weekend after attempting to kill a Paris police officer with a shard of glass following a brawl.

The brother of ISIS terrorist Khaled Sharrouf will face court today charged with savagely bashing the mother of his children His partner staggered into Riverwood police station on Tuesday night with severe facial injuries and her head shaved.

Court documents reveal Sharrouf is accused of choking his partner, punching her, kicking her and stomping on her, causing a fractured left eye socket, 10 broken ribs and two fractured vertebrae.

Sharrouf is also charged with common assault in relation to “forcibly cutting all her hair from her head”.
