PARIS (Reuters) – French former film star Brigitte Bardot went on trial on Tuesday for insulting Muslims, the fifth time she has faced the charge of “inciting racial hatred” over her controversial remarks about Islam and its followers.

Prosecutors asked that the Paris court hand the 73-year-old former sex symbol a two-month suspended prison sentence and fine her 15,000 euros ($23,760) for saying the Muslim community was “destroying our country and imposing its acts”.

Since retiring from the film industry in the 1970s, Bardot has become a prominent animal rights activist but she has also courted controversy by denouncing Muslim traditions and immigration from predominantly Muslim countries.

She has been fined four times for inciting racial hatred since 1997, at first 1,500 euros and most recently 5,000.

Prosecutor Anne de Fontette told the court she was seeking a tougher sentence than usual, adding: “I am a little tired of prosecuting Mrs Bardot.”

Bardot did not attend the trial because she said she was physically unable to. The verdict is expected in several weeks.

French anti-racist groups complained last year about comments Bardot made about the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha in a letter to President Nicolas Sarkozy that was later published by her foundation.

Muslims traditionally mark Eid al-Adha by slaughtering a sheep or another animal to commemorate the prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son on God’s orders.

France is home to 5 million Muslims, Europe’s largest Muslim community, making up 8 percent of France’s population.

Osama bin Laden’s son is prepared to take his fight for a British visa to the highest legal authority in Europe, his wife said today in a television interview.

Omar bin Laden, 26, met his wife at the pyramids in Egypt and is now determined to come to the UK to build a life with her.

Zaina al Sabah bin Laden, 52, who used to be known as Jane Felixe-Browne, has a home in Moulton, Cheshire.

She told GMTV Omar had passed all the necessary immigration tests, but said she was “99%” sure his application would be rejected because his father was the boss of al-Qaida.

Berlusconi’s centre-right People of Freedom party scored a decisive victory in Italy’s general election held on Sunday and Monday. He is already reported to be putting together the cabinet for his new government, the third he has led as prime minister.

A third message posted by ‘Fursan al-Fajr’ reads: “Several days ago, Berlusconi said that if he won [the elections] he would visit Israel.”

A former teacher at an Islamic school, who alleged that it taught an offensive and racist view of non-Muslims, has been awarded £70,000 by an employment tribunal after winning his case for unfair dismissal.
Colin Cook told the tribunal in Watford that pupils were taught from Arabic books that likened Jews and Christians to “monkeys” and “pigs” at The King Fahad Academy, which is funded and run by the Saudi Arabian Government.
The tribunal ruled that Mr Cook, a British Muslim, was unfairly dismissed from his £36,000-a-year post at the school in Acton, West London, in December 2006 after blowing the whistle on systematic cheating at a GCSE exam.
The panel found that the school created a “smokescreen” to try to justify his dismissal after 18 years’ unblemished service.
It awarded Mr Cook £58,800 in compensation for loss of earnings and £10,500 for injury to feelings. But it rejected his claim that the school discriminated against him on racial grounds.
Mr Cook told the hearing that after leaving the school another member of staff gave him extracts from an Arabic textbook, which encouraged students to believe that all religions other than Islam were worthless.

The books referred to “the repugnant characteristics of the Jews”. Another passage said: “Those whom God has cursed and with whom he is angry, he has turned into monkeys and pigs. They worship Satan.”

Mr Cook alleged that the books were spreading race hatred. “They should not be brought into this country and they should not be used in this country,” he said.

The school denied ever teaching any form of racial hatred and insisted that the offending passages in the books were “misinterpreted” and were never used in class. But it later got rid of the books.

THE 2005 AFL Grand Final was nominated as the original bombing target of an alleged home-grown Melbourne terror cell by the man described as its leader or ‘sheik’.

A jury heard today that in conversation with a witness at the terror trial Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 48, said the MCG bombing had been cancelled because of police and ASIO raids on members of the group in July 2005.
Izzydeen Atik told the Supreme Court that Mr Benbrika nominated two other targets, the NAB Cup and Crown Casino during the 2006 Melbourne Grand Prix weekend.

Mr Atik, 27, has admitted he had discussions about bombings with Mr Benbrika as a follow up to two earlier secretly taped conversations heard by the jury today.

While they were driving together Mr Atik said they had a conversation about terrorist attacks.

“The original target was supposed to be the Grand Final of 2005,” Mr Atik said he was told by Mr Benbrika.

Mr Atik said Mr Benbrika told him the raids on group members had disrupted funding.

On trial before Justice Bernard Bongiorno are: Mr Benbrika of Dallas, Shane Kent, 31, Meadow Heights, Majed Raad, 23, Coburg, Abdullah Merhi, 22, Fawkner, Mr Joud, 23, Hoppers Crossing, Ahmed Raad, 24, Fawkner, Fadl Sayadi, 28, Coburg, Ezzit Raad, 26, Preston, Hany Taha, 33, Hadfield, Shoue Hammoud, 28, Hadfield, Bassam Raad, 26, Brunswick and Amer Haddara, 28, Yarraville.

According to a 12-page indictment the alleged act or threat would have involved the detonation of an explosive or use of weapons.

This was said to be in pursuit of “advancing a political, religious or ideological cause, namely the pursuit of violent jihad” with the intention of coercing or intimidating the Government or the public.

The jury was played two bugged conversations in Mr Benbrika’s Dallas home on March 4, 2005 between him and Mr Atik.

In the conversations Mr Benbrika talks of members of the group being under suveillance and their phones being bugged.

At one point Mr Benbrika says tio Mr Atik “we’ll damage buildings. Blast things.”

Mr Benbrika continues:”It has to be proper because it’s very difficult to get them. I mean, especially the product. After 11 September it’s not easy.”

Earlier, Mr Atik told the court he carried out credit card fraud to help a group of fellow-Muslims who are alleged to have formed a home-grown terror cell in Melbourne.

Mr Atik said he had previously carried out credit card frauds and was persuaded by Aimen Joud that it would be helpful to a group of men he had met at secret religious lectures.

“It would be useful to the group,” Mr Atik told the Supreme Court.

Mr Atik said he obtained credit card details from taxi drivers for $10 each and used them to purchase mobile phone SIM cards and airline tickets.

He said he would put $1200 credit on the SIM cards and hand them to members of the group. Members of the group also took flights using assumed names.

Mr Atik said he had been reluctant at first to resume credit card fraud because it was against the Muslim religion.

But Mr Joud told him “you would be surprised what’s permissable in our religion”.

Mr Joud said it was permissable to take money from the “kufur”, or disbelievers, because they had shed the blood of Muslim innocents in countries like Afghanistan.

“Their blood is lawful and their wealth is lawful,” Mr Atik said he was told.

Mr Atik said he came to Melbourne from Sydney in 2003 and lived with his cousin in Newport.

He went to Mecca in 2004 with his cousin and when he returned to Melbourne he struck up a friendship with Mr Joud.

The pair attended Dars classes, or religious lectures, when he met Mr Benbrika, whom he described as ‘the sheik” and ‘the chief’.

Mr Joud told Mr Atik not to tell anyone about the Dars classes and through them he met all of the men on trial and he identified them to the jury.

Mr Atik said he was arrested in 2005 by police and charged with credit card fraud.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Eight out of 10 Arabs have an unfavorable view of the United States and only six percent believe the U.S. troop build-up in Iraq in the last year has worked, said a poll of six Arab countries released on Monday.

The poll by the University of Maryland and Zogby International, also found most Arabs did not see U.S. foe Iran as a threat and they sympathized more with Hamas in the Palestinian Territories than U.S.-backed Fatah.

“There is a growing mistrust and lack of confidence in the United States,” said Shibley Telhami, a University of Maryland professor in charge of the annual poll.

The survey canvassed the opinions of about 4,000 people over the past month in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates. It has a margin of error of about 1.6 percent.

Of those polled, 83 percent had an unfavorable view of the United States and 70 percent had no confidence in the superpower.

“You see this (mistrust) in the number of people who are more comfortable with the US withdrawal from Iraq,” said Telhami, noting that more people in this year’s annual survey wanted the United States to leave Iraq.

Last year, 44 percent believed Iraqis would find a way to bridge their differences if the United States pulled out but that figure rose to 61 percent this year.

Only six percent of the respondents believed the U.S. boost of troop levels in Iraq last year by 30,000 had worked to reduce the conflict and one in three mistrusted news reports that violence had declined at all.
