When the Mob Came for the Jews of Baghdad

I was 10 when mobs attacked the Jewish community of Baghdad, my community, with cruel and unimaginable violence. Rioters maimed, raped, killed and robbed the unsuspecting Jews. This massacre, which began June 1, 1941, was called the Farhud, Arabic for “violent dispossession” or pogrom.
The seeds of the Farhud had been sown two months earlier. On April 1, a pro-Nazi coup d’état overthrew the pro-British Iraqi government and seized power. The coup was staged by Rashid Ali al Gaylani, an Arab nationalist and former Iraqi prime minister, supported by four army generals, and aided by Fritz Grobba, a former German ambassador to Iraq. This dangerous group was further stoked by the grand mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al Husseini, who deeply hated the Jews. Anti-Semitic propaganda began to appear in the daily newspapers and in broadcasts on Radio Baghdad. It was intended to inflame the Muslim population and rally support for the new regime.
The Jewish community bore the brunt of this explosive combination of Arab nationalism, Nazi propaganda and anti-Semitism. In the weeks after the coup my family stayed home most of the time, huddled around the large console radio. We listened with disbelief to reports of Jews being arrested and accused of anti-Iraqi sentiment and of spying for the British. I shook just thinking of the torture being carried out to extract false confessions.
On May 31, 1941, the British army arrived at the outskirts of Baghdad. The pro-Nazi government collapsed quickly, but al Gaylani and his co-conspirators escaped to Iran. The Jewish community in Baghdad felt a sense of relief, especially as it coincided with the eve of the Shavuot festival, commemorating the time when God gave us the Ten Commandments. We had good reason to rejoice.

Last summer, Turkish authorities transformed Hagia Sophia (“Holy Wisdom”) — which was originally built, and for a millennium functioned, as one of Christendom’s greatest cathedrals — into a mosque (again). On that Friday, July 24, 2020 (which for millions of Eastern Christians is now deemed a “day of mourning“), Muslims met inside the desecrated church, where they were led in prayer by a sword-waving imam, to spasmodic cries of “Allahu akbar.”
The Turks, beginning with their president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, have been presenting this bit of cultural appropriation as their “right.” Imam Ali Erbas, Turkey’s president of religious affairs, has gone one farther, claiming that “the goal is for all our mosques and especially Hagia Sophia to become centers of knowledge about Islam.”
So be it. As the anniversary of the Turkish conquest of Constantinople and its Hagia Sophia recently passed (May 29, 1453), let us revisit what happened on that day — a day that truly does impart much “knowledge about Islam,” not least because we have primary source documents describing exactly what the Turks did, particularly in and around Hagia Sophia. Highest paid bureaucrat Tony Fauci has lamely denied that he funneled US taxpayer money to our Chinese communist enemies to fund the gain of function research that apparently resulted in the Wuhan coronavirus. But even if he did fund the GoF research, it was worth the risk. Fauci has said so himself:
The Weekend Australian unearthed a paper Fauci wrote for the American Society for Microbiology in October 2012 in which he argued in support of gain-of-function research. Such research involves making viruses more infectious and/or deadly. …
The Weekend Australian report adds that Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, did not alert senior White House officials before lifting a ban on gain-of-function research in 2017.
Fauci acknowledged that scientists could become infected with an experimental virus, and that this could lead to a pandemic. Then he declared,
Scientists working in this field might say – as indeed I have said – that the benefits of such experiments and the resulting knowledge outweigh the risks. …
Within the research community, many have expressed concern that important research progress could come to a halt just because of the fear that someone, somewhere, might attempt to replicate these experiments sloppily.
As we learned from Chernobyl, the place to have science done sloppily is in a communist country. Communists ascribe little value to human life, so safety is not a priority.

Australians must stop flying overseas, turn off their air conditioners and drive more slowly if the world is to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, according to killjoys at the International Energy Agency. Imagine telling Aussies, who currently are not permitted to fly anywhere, that they must fly less.

Or demanding that Sydney motorists must drive more slowly – which, if they did, would be called parking.

And yet that is exactly what the Paris based agency has done in its newly released “Net Zero by 2050 – a Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector” report.

The shadow foreign secretary’s tirade against Hungary is bizarre. Lisa Nandy, Labour’s shadow foreign secretary, is apparently not happy that Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, is visiting the UK. In a series of tweets today, Nandy accuses the Hungarian government of all manner of misdeeds, from undermining civil liberties to anti-Semitism. If Nandy’s fantasy depiction of Hungary were correct, Budapest would be just a couple of months away from its own version of Kristallnacht. Her hysterical reaction illustrates an arrogant, almost colonial mentality directed at people who aren’t ‘like us’. 
The Western cultural elites despise Hungary in general, and its prime minister in particular, all because it refuses to play by their political rules. In contrast to Western politicians’ technocratic, globalist outlook, Hungary strongly affirms sovereignty and national values. The Hungarian government is conservative and traditional. Its values are a synthesis of Christianity and humanism. In many ways, the politics of this government resemble those of Charles de Gaulle in France or of the Christian Democratic regimes of Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl in Germany. The Orbán government is also bitterly opposed to the woke ideology promoted by Hollywood and Western political elites. For example, it regards multiculturalism as a threat to social cohesion and it believes the cultural politics of identity have a corrosive influence on society.
