* Muslim group protests US Air Force Academy decision to invite speakers who blast Islam

DENVER: A Muslim advocacy group is decrying the U.S. Air Force Academy’s decision to invite three self-described former terrorists who the group said slam Islam with “hate-filled” rhetoric.

* Telling the truth about Islam is ‘hate speech’.

The D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations said one of the speakers, Walid Shoebat, has said that “Islam is the devil.”

* He is not wrong.

Shoebat, Kamal Saleem and Zachariah Anani are scheduled to speak Wednesday at the 50th Annual Academy Assembly in Colorado Springs, where the topic of the four-day event is “Dismantling Terrorism.”

Shoebat has published an online autobiography describing his journey from membership in the Palestine Liberation Organization to Israeli sympathizer. Saleem also is a former member of the PLO, and Zak Anani describes himself as a former member of several Lebanese terrorist groups. The three appear together regularly.

Maj. Brett Ashworth, an Air Force Academy spokesman, defended the decision, saying the purpose of the event is “to educate future officers and delegates from 50 colleges on the ideology and methodology of terrorists” and the three men could provide valuable insight.

But Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for CAIR, said the men also denounce the Muslim faith.

“Islam is the devil? I mean c’mon!” Hooper said. “And these people are going to talk as experts to cadets who may possibly serve in parts of the Muslim world?”

Saleem, who said he quit the PLO in 1985 after converting to Christianity, said in a telephone interview there are always people who disagree with his views about Islam.

Others, he said, tell him, “Thank you for enlightening us.”

Hooper said the three speakers have triggered protests at speaking engagements throughout the country, and he told Air Force academy officials that inviting the men to speak about terrorism would be like “inviting David Duke to speak about race relations.”

He said CAIR offered to connect the Air Force with Muslims in Colorado who also could speak at the event to balance the discussion. However, he said he was told the topic was terrorism, not religion.

* Hooper thinks CAIR has a right to shout dissent down or possibly assassinate them…
“The academy assembly has nothing to do with religion or evangelical Christianity for that matter,” Ashworth said. “This is not going to be a discussion on Islam. It’s a discussion on terrorism.”

* But Islam is based on terrorism. How do you separate one from the other?

Religion has been a sensitive topic at the Air Force Academy in the past. A group of cadet graduates had claimed the academy violated their rights, saying evangelical Christian values were forced onto them. They filed a lawsuit, which was dismissed in 2006 after a judge said they couldn’t claim their rights were violated because they no longer attended the academy.

An Air Force task force also concluded there was no religious discrimination at the Academy but noted some cadets and staff were insensitive. In February 2006, the Air Force adopted new guidelines cautioning top officers about promoting their religious views.

A video that shows young boys being trained in kidnapping and assassination was discovered during a raid on an al-Qaeda safe house in Iraq, the U.S. military said Tuesday.
The video shows about 20 boys wearing ski masks and carrying pistols, assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. In some cases the weapons appear to dwarf the youngsters carrying them.

Excerpts, which were viewed by USA TODAY, appear to show the boys running through training exercises under the supervision of trainers, said Rear Adm. Gregory Smith, spokesman for the coalition command in Iraq. Portions of the video, the content of which could not be independently verified, will be released publicly today.

An analysis of the video provided by the U.S. command in Baghdad said the boys were proclaiming allegiance to al-Qaeda.

The tape was found among other al-Qaeda material uncovered during a raid north of Baghdad on Dec. 4, Smith said.

He arrived by airplane from Switzerland under close surveillance measures and followed everywhere by his two bodyguards. Omar Bin Laden stays in a hotel in the centre of Rome with his wife.

Yesterday he had dinner in a hotel close to the Vatican, after that he said he wanted to return to Italy to visit Vatican City. This morning the couple admired the Colosseum before doing some shopping in Via dei Condotti.

MSA held their 2007 West Zone Conference in April 2007 at UC-Berkeley. Amir Mertaban, the president of MSA West, gave a speech entitled “Methods of Da’wah.” In his speech, Mertaban said the following of Osama bin Laden, polygamy, and jihad:

Mertaban: War in Iraq or Afghanistan or Osama bin Laden or Saddam Hussein. Don’t ever compromise on Islam! And don’t ever compromise on your Muslim brothers and sisters in which you have no evidence. ‘Penis massage’ med student should have conviction: govt

A Brisbane judge spared him a criminal conviction so as not to jeopardise his future career, but the would-be doctor who tried to give an 11-year-old boy a penis massage might not be so lucky a second time.

State Attorney General Kerry Shine is seeking a jail term for disgraced University of Queensland medical student Shakeel Mirza, who escaped with only 12 months probation over his attempt to molest the boy in February 2006.

A criminal conviction was not formally recorded after his defence lawyers successfully argued that a black mark against his name could prevent Mirza, 27, from getting a government Blue Card – or security clearance – allowing him to treat children in hospital.

But at an appeal hearing in Brisbane’s Supreme Court today, barrister for the Crown, Michael Copely described Mirza’s punishment as “manifestly inadequate”, and accused sentencing judge David Searles of “closing his eyes” to other sentencing options.

He asked the court to resentence Mirza to 12 months’ jail – albeit wholly suspended – and record a criminal conviction.

“The offence was serious enough in itself, given the age disparity of the parties and the breach of trust,” Mr Copely argued.

The Pakistani-born medical student had been appointed as a mentor to the 11-year-old boy under the Lions Club’s “Aunties and Uncles” program when he tried to force his hands down the youngster’s pants at the family’s Brisbane home.

The court heard he had been rubbing the child’s head to relax him when he offered to massage the child’s penis instead because “it would feel better”.

The boy managed to fend off Mirza’s advances.

The Islamists’ Best Friend at the UN

Louise Arbour, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will be presiding over Durban II – the UN’s 2009 follow-up to its controversial 2001 ‘anti-racism’ hatefest in Durban, South Africa.

While Canada, her home country, announced that it will not attend the Durban II Conference “circus of intolerance,” as Canada’s Secretary of State for Multiculturalism so aptly described it, Ms. Arbour will be the Secretary-General of this circus.

Arbour showed her true colors a couple of weeks ago when she went out of her way to endorse a new pan-Arab human rights charter that includes a commitment to eliminate Zionism, which it explicitly equates with racism. In the preamble to the Arab charter that she sought fit to unabashedly praise, the charter speaks of “rejecting all forms of racism and Zionism,” while Article 2 says that “racism, Zionism and foreign occupation and domination” should be “condemned and efforts must be deployed for their elimination.”

Apparently Arbour forgot that even the UN General Assembly had voted to repeal its infamous 1975 ‘Zionism equals racism’ resolution. Only after UN Watch asked her office for a clarification of her original remarks that had omitted any reference to this repeal did Arbour backtrack somewhat in a follow-up statement that she issued on January 30th. However, she has not followed her Canadian countrymen’s example by withdrawing from her leadership of Durban II, where the ‘Zionism equals racism’ theme is certain to be front and center.

Anyone who has observed Arbour over the years should not be surprised by her pro-Islamist sympathies. For example, she is on record as saying back in 2006 that the Palestinian terrorists’ rocket attacks aimed specifically at killing civilians in Israel are far less of a human rights concern than Israel’s retaliatory military strikes in which some civilians are accidental casualties. She pronounced Israel guilty of “massive” human rights abuses. She said that “It is a small distinction as to whether you desire the result, or you foresee it as virtually certain and you do not care.”

Of course, the Israelis do care very much about civilian casualties and do whatever they can to minimize them. No matter how much restraint Israel shows in the face of unremitting attacks aimed at murdering its civilians, it is Arbour who does not care – about the truth.

The grainy video, taken on a mobile phone and played in a British court last year, shows a young woman lying on a bed, telling how her father had tried to kill her that day. She says he gave her some brandy, pulled the curtains and asked her to turn around, at which point she fled the house. It sounds far-fetched, but Banaz Mahmod knew what she was talking about. Within a month, the 19-year-old was dead.

Mahmod, an Iraqi Kurd whose family arrived in Britain as asylum seekers when she was 10, had been forced to marry a Kurdish man from the Midlands. But the marriage was a disaster and Mahmod fled to the family home in south London, saying her husband had raped her.

Back in London she fell in love with another man, Rahmat Sulemani, an Iranian Kurd who her family said was not a good enough Muslim. One day she kissed him on a street. A Kurdish bystander photographed the kiss on a mobile phone and showed it to her uncle, Ari Mahmod. He called a family meeting where it was decided the couple would be murdered.

Three months after she disappeared, Mahmod’s naked body was found in a case buried in a Birmingham backyard. The gang of young men her uncle had recruited to kill her had also raped and tortured her, and left the bootlace they used to strangle her around her neck.

“We got it all wrong”

Another U.S. threat assessment has been issued that refuses to identify the enemy threatening us, and instead defines the enemy only as “extremists”. Today’s annual threat assessment from the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) fails to use the terms “Jihad”, “Jihadist”, “Islamism”, or “Islamist” in identifying the enemy. The question must be asked how the U.S. can meaningfully assess threats, if it can’t even identify the enemy. The term “radical Islamic” (used twice) and “militant Islamic” (used once) is the only term close to “Islamist”, and such terms as “radical” and “militant” have very different meanings to different people. Predominantly, when describing the enemy, the DNI annual assessment today uses the term “extremist(s)” (used 18 times) or “extremism” (used twice). In effect, the DNI views that America is fighting a war against “extremism”.

This follows last week’s State of the Union message where the term “extremist” was the primary definition of the enemy, with the term extremism, extremist(s) used nine times in defining the enemy (see recent columns on this by Counterterrorism Blog’s Andrew Cochran and by Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, the founder and Chairman of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy). Our national leadership continues to ignore political “Islamism” as defined in the 9/11 Commission report, and refuses to make the distinction, as per Dr. Jasser, between “personal spiritual Islam from political Islam”, but instead addresses threats from ambiguously defined “extremists” as its primary concern.

Former Pakistani generals: “the war for the independence of Kashmir cannot be won without jihad”

* ‘Indepencence’ of course will never happen. Just like democracy under sharia can never happen. Just like the soldiers of Allah are not ‘freedom fighters’- because there is no freedom under Islam. Many times, as I travel around the country and give talks about the nature and magnitude of the jihad threat, I encounter people who tell me that what I am characterizing as jihad struggles around the world are actually simple nationalist struggles for self-determination. And that is, indeed, the conventional wisdom — witness the mainstream media’s consistent designation of jihadists in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Kashmir and elsewhere as “insurgents,” “militants,” and the like. Never “jihadists.” The conventional wisdom is that Islam has nothing to do with any of those conflicts. This story is a tough one for that conventional wisdom, for it frames the Kashmir nationalist struggle within the context of jihad, thus indicating that these Pakistani generals do not believe that the two are the same thing, and don’t think that their audience confuses the two, either.

Do Not Apologize for Cartoons of Muhammad

So long as men are free to criticize, free to dissent, free to present their own ideas without fear of coercive reprisals–the fight for a rational culture has a chance. But the crisis over cartoons of Mohammad threatens to wipe out freedom of speech. Our leaders have shamefully sided with the mobs chanting death threats and torching embassies. Free speech, our leaders say, is not an absolute, its exercise must not offend religious beliefs–it is a right, in other words, that we are not free to exercise. So far, no Western government has declared that anyone, on domestic or foreign soil, who threatens a citizen with death for speaking out will be dealt with by the full force of the government.

If the threats, riots and killings fomented by Islamic states are allowed to proceed–if they are allowed to compel Western thinkers into self-censorship–the first to be silenced will be the critics of Islam. And then the critics of religion. And then everyone else.

Because of the profound default of our governments, it is incumbent on citizens to defend our hard-won rights. We should all demand that our governments staunchly defend our freedom of speech. And every media outlet should publish the cartoons–as an act of defiance against those who claim the right to silence any one of us, as a show of support for those who are brave enough to defy the killers, and as a practical means of defusing the immediate threat, since the killers will have not just a handful but thousands of individuals to behead.
