WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The FBI said on Sunday that there was no evidence of a terrorism link in the case of two college engineering students who possessed explosive materials in South Carolina over the weekend.

The two men, described in local media reports as non-U.S. citizens of Middle Eastern descent, were taken into custody late on Saturday near Charleston, South Carolina, after local police noticed what looked like explosives in their Toyota sedan during a routine traffic stop.

The FBI said the material proved to be for making homemade fireworks, not dangerous munitions.

The men 21-year-old Yousef Megahed and 24-year-old Ahmed Mohamed (seen in the video attachment) were pulled over Saturday evening during a routine traffic stop near Myers Road and Highway 176. Among the explosive devices found were igniters and fusers. Few details about the suspects are known at this time. They are believed to be students at a Florida college. They are of Middle Eastern descent and are NOT US citizens. Neither man has been charged, but charges are expected Monday. A press conference will be held in Berkeley County on Monday morning. Among the potential charges is possession of unlawful explosives. Officials are not at this time releasing any additional information. Highway 176 in Goose Creek was shut down and has since reopened. Once-exotic forms of Muslim women’s head and body garments have now become both familiar in the West and the source of fractious political and legal disputes.

The hijab (a hair-covering) is ever-more popular in Detroit but has been banned from French public schools, discouraged by the International Football Association Board, and excluded from a court in the U.S. state of Georgia.

The jilbab (a garment that leaves only the face and hands exposed) was, in a case partly argued by Tony Blair’s wife, first allowed, then forbidden in an English school.

Sultaana Freeman wanted her Florida drivers license to show her in a niqab, but an Orlando court said no.

If Quebec election authorities disallow the niqab from voting booths and a judge disallowed it from a Florida driver’s license, it is permitted in British courts and a Dutch candidate for municipal office wore one. A British hospital even invented a niqab patients’ gown.
The burqa (a total head and body covering) has been barred from classrooms in the UK, is illegal in public places in five Belgian towns, and the Dutch legislature has attempted to ban it altogether. Italy’s “Charter of Values, Citizenship and Immigration” calls face coverings not acceptable. A courtroom in the United States has expelled a burqa’ed woman.

In brief, no general rules govern Islamic headwear in the West.

Some observers would ban hijabs from public places, but what legal grounds exist for doing so? Following my rule of thumb that Muslims enjoy the same rights and obligations as other citizens, but not special rights or obligations, a woman’s freedom of expression grants her the option to wear a hijab.

In contrast, burqas and niqabs should be banned in all public spaces because they present a security risk. Anyone might lurk under those shrouds – female or male, Muslim or non-Muslim, decent citizen, fugitive, or criminal – with who knows what evil purposes.

Former speaker says energy independence is key

Washington — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday the Bush administration is waging a “phony war” on terrorism, warning that the country is losing ground against the kind of Islamic radicals who attacked the country on Sept. 11, 2001.

A more effective approach, said Gingrich, would begin with a national energy strategy aimed at weaning the country from its reliance on imported oil and some of the regimes that petro-dollars support.

“None of you should believe we are winning this war. There is no evidence that we are winning this war,” the ex-Georgian told a group of about 300 students attending a conference for collegiate conservatives.

Gingrich, who led the so-called Republican Revolution that won the GOP control of both houses of Congress in 1994 midterm elections, said more must be done to marshal national resources to combat Islamic militants at home and abroad and to prepare the country for future attack. He was unstinting in his criticism of his fellow Republicans, in the White House and on Capitol Hill.

“We were in charge for six years,” he said, referring to the period between 2001 and early 2007, when the GOP controlled the White House and both houses of Congress. “I don’t think you can look and say that was a great success.”

Thursday’s National Conservative Student Conference was sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation, a Herndon, Va.-based group founded in the 1960s as a political counterpoint to the left-leaning activists who coalesced around the civil rights movement and opposition to the Vietnam War.

Gingrich retains strong support among conservatives and ranked fifth among possible Republican nominees behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, with the backing of 7 percent of those queried in a ABC News/Washington Post poll taken last week. The poll surveyed 403 Republicans and Republican-leaning adults nationwide and has a 5 percentage-point margin of error.

“I believe we need to find leaders who are prepared to tell the truth … about the failures of the performance of Republicans … failed bureaucracies … about how dangerous the world is,” he said when asked what kind of Republican he would back for president.

Al Qaeda Trumpet Adam Gadahn Threatens  Embassy Jihad

(CNN) — U.S. Embassies and American interests “at home and abroad” are prime targets for terrorist attacks, American al Qaeda member Adam Yahiye Gadahn said in a newly released al Qaeda-produced video.

“We shall continue to target you at home and abroad just as you target us at home and abroad … ,” Gadahn — also known as Azzam the American — says in the video provided to CNN by www.LauraMansfield.com, a Web site that analyzes terrorism.

Later in the video, which is about an hour long and takes the form of a documentary, the self-proclaimed American jihadist makes explicit threats against the United States and U.S. interests, singling out embassies and consulates.

“These spy dens and military command and control centers — from which you plotted your aggression against Afghanistan and Iraq and which still provide vital moral, military, material and logistical support to the crusade — shall continue to be legitimate targets for brave Muslims … until and unless you heed our demands: Stop the crusade and leave the Muslims alone,” he said.

The question is especially apposite, because we now know the consequences for every single European society which has admitted large numbers of Muslims: social alienation, religious antagonism and outright terrorism.

We know this. We all know it. And yet we continue to allow Muslim immigration. Why? What do we gain from it?

Well, up until two weeks ago you might have said, more doctors – for when Mary Harney declared that she was going to solve the impasse in the health service by bringing in medical graduates from around the world, we all accepted that doctors, no matter their religion, were dedicated to saving life.

That was then. We know otherwise now. Clearly the Hippocratic Oath doesn’t have the universal power we once thought. Even Mengele, for all his evil, could maintain the fiction that his abominable experiments were of some medical use. But no one could possibly say that of the medical mass-murder plots in Britain, where the term WMD has taken on a new and grisly resonance for some Muslim doctors. Which ones? We don’t know. Okay: so why take the risk?

Now, whenever I write about immigration, the response is a bristling silence, as the binary-weight of physical fear and PC-conformism successfully suppresses debate on Ireland’s future. Occasionally, one hears a little bleat, “You’re not being helpful” – ah yes, the lily-livered whinge of unprincipled liberalism.

Thus, the Dail has never debated the effects of Christian, European population-movement into Ireland, never mind the consequences of Islamic immigration. This is frivolousness to the point of delinquency, the hallmark of a society which has neither faith in its own values, nor a determination for them to endure. And a society which does not defend its core-certainties is sooner or later doomed. Much of Europe is so afflicted, and Britain is in an advanced stage of the disease.

Islamic norms are now tolerated, and informally enforced, across many British cities, where women routinely wear full face-veils. Of Britain’s two million Muslims, over 300,000 believe suicide attacks in the West are justified, and 500,000 believe the 7/7 attacks in London two years ago were the work of British intelligence.

Some 600,000 do not even regard themselves as British, 37pc want sharia law in Britain, and one-quarter want to live in all-Muslim areas. Meanwhile, MI5 is close to being overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the domestic terrorist insurgency: 100 Islamicist suspects are already awaiting trial, and there are some 200 terrorist networks, with 1,700 members, now operating around the country.

Lawyer serves notice on Tom Tancredo

LAHORE: Lawyer MD Tahir on Friday served a legal notice on Tom Tancredo for his statement and asked him for public apology. He said if Tancredo would not seek apology he (Tancredo) would be sued for $500 million damages for hurting religious sentiments of 1.5 billion Muslims across the world. He said only a sick-minded person could ever think of injuring feelings of Muslims because Muslims never ever thought of attacking the US. Supreme Court Bar Association secretary Sarfaraz Cheema termed the statement as an eye-opener for the whole Muslim community. He urged Muslims in particular and US government in general to take notice of blasphemy committed by Tancredo. He said Tancredo had hurt feelings of Muslims. He said the statement was meant to create clash between the civilisations. He said, “We will sacrifice our lives for the sake of our religion.” He urged Muslims all over the world to be united against the anti-Islamic elements. He criticised the Pakistan government for helping the US in war against terrorism. Today, State Department spokesman Tom Casey took particular exception to Tancredo’s remarks, the AP writes:

“It is absolutely outrageous and reprehensible for anyone to suggest attacks on holy sites, whether they are Muslim, Christian, Jewish or those of any other religion,” a clearly agitated Casey told reporters, shaking his head in disgust.

Italy: Mosque Terror School Uncovered

Perugia is the capital city of Umbria in northern Italy. Yesterday, a mosque was raided in the outskirts of the city, and three Moroccans, including the mosque’s imam were arrested.

The news appears in Reuters, MWC News, Associated Press via CNN, Fox News and the Herald Sun, from the Evening Echo and the BBC.

The grubby exterior of the Ponte Felcino mosque makes it appear unimposing, but inside it housed a terrorist training school, claimed Italian anti-terrorism chief Carlo De Stefano. Twenty foreign students were also arrested yesterday in a related series of raids. Those without residence permits will be deported, state police. 23 raids took place.

Malaysian minister defends caning of prisoners as gruesome video appears on internet

Strapped on a wooden frame, a prisoner braces himself for the brutal onslaught.

Within moments of the first blow being struck by the cane-wielding official, the skin on his buttocks breaks and the raw wound begins to open.

Lash after lash after lash follows until his flesh is reduced to a bloody mess. With each blow, the body flinches and there is a cry.

The caning was meted out in a jail in Malaysia, where the authorities insist that it is a legitimate punishment.

However, a video of the flogging has caused an outcry after it was posted on the Internet and seen around the world.

In images condemned by Malaysia’s own lawyers, the unidentified male prisoner, thought to be a drug dealer, is shown being struck 20 times on his bare buttocks with a rotan – a bamboo-like cane.

The Bar Council of Malaysia, which represents 8,000 lawyers, has called for such punishment to be abolished and stepped up its campaign after highlighting the video images.

The six-minute clip, entitled Malaysian Caning Judicial Corporal Punishment, was posted on www.lifeleak.com, an international video-sharing site.
“We are against the death penalty and corporal punishment,” said council president Ambiga Sreenevasan.

“It’s against all international human rights norms and the various conventions on torture. It’s inhumane and degrading.”

However, deputy internal security minister Fu Ah Kiow defended the punishment. He said the video clip was recorded at a local prison and is used in drug prevention and other anti-crime campaigns.

He would not reveal details of the prisoner involved. But the man was understood to be a drug dealer who received dozens of lashes, as well as a lengthy prison term.

In the video, he is seen being led away after the beating then shown undergoing a medical examination.

The minister added: “The video is a means to educate the public and to show how hideous caning can be. It is a deterrence for drug traffickers and drug addicts.

“Somehow somebody duplicated it and posted it on the website, but it’s not done by our officials. It is for education and training purposes, there’s no big deal about it.”

Flogging is widely used in Malaysia for various offences including drug crimes, rape and illegal entry into the country.

As many as one in 11 British Muslims agree with and proactively support terrorism, a Government adviser has warned police.

Haras Rafiq also told officers at Scotland Yard that up to 20 per cent of the Muslim population ‘ sympathize’ with militants, while stopping short of being prepared to ‘blow themselves up’.

His remarks underline the scale of the task facing Gordon Brown to win the hearts and minds of Muslims, only a week after he promised an extra £70million to councils and community groups to fight extremism.

Mr Rafiq, an adviser to the Government’s preventing extremism taskforce, said: “A percentage of people actually agree and support pro actively the people that are deciding to blow themselves up.

“It varies, it can be 7 per cent, 5 per cent, 9 per cent.”

With 1.6million Muslims living in the UK, nine per cent is the equivalent of 144,000 people supporting terrorism.

‘Proactively’ supporting terrorism is understood to mean the people are vocal in their support for fanatics, rather than actively helping them to commit atrocities.

Mr Rafiq, filmed by Channel 4’s Dispatches, went on: “Next we can have a percentage of people that can actually sympathise.

“These people at this stage … won’t go out and be operational and won’t decide to blow themselves up but can sympathise with the people that can blow themselves up.

“Again this can be in double digits. Then we have a percentage of the population that actually empathises with the people that blow themselves up. It could be 15 to 20 per cent.

“It could be somebody who says, ‘I don’t agree that these guys are blowing themselves up but I can actually understand why’.”

* Well, if they are in agreement then perhaps Britain should look at some way of repatriation, wouldn’t that make sense?

Dispatches discovered that Abu Mohammed, a fanatical preacher based in Europe, managed to make a series of visits to Britain, lecturing to young Muslims in houses in Luton, before being banned by the Home Office in March this year.

He continues to radicalise followers here via the Internet.

Mohammed is filmed by reporter Phil Rees declaring: “We are in a state of war and no covenant exists…British Muslims should know that the British Government will do everything to frighten them, to make them very uncomfortable and they have to be prepared to pay the price and fight back.”
