This brings to 18 the number of asylum seekers now lured to their deaths since Kevin Rudd softened our laws:

On Tuesday, nine bodies, eight of them Pakistanis, were found floating in the South China Sea off Pengerang… In both incidents, the foreigners had luggage with them and most were carrying huge amounts of money…

(I)ntelligence reports indicated that the foreigners were on their way to Indonesia before continuing their journey to Australia where they hoped seek asylum.

The morality of public policy should be judged not by intentions but consequences, not by the seeming but the doing. In this case, it seems that Rudd’s compassion kills.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House later this month for the first time since he took office March 31. Netanyahu has not endorsed the creation of a Palestinian state, though that has been a cornerstone of Western policy in the region. As a result, there have been predictions of clashes between the governments of Obama and Netanyahu.
 
Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America, admits he is worried about how Obama will deal with the Jewish state.
 
“This could turn out to be the most hostile administration to Israel we have ever seen,” Klein laments. “Remember, this isn’t good for America. A weak Israel is not able fight Islamic terrorism as a strong Israel can — and Israel is America’s only reliable ally in the Middle East.”

Yesterday, as Pakistani forces stepped up their campaign to retake territory in the districts of Buner, Dir and Swat, it emerged that in one Taliban-controlled village, Pir Baba in Buner, the militants were holding 2,000 people as human shields in case the army attacked.

20090502-085632-loc_12About 50 Muslim men took their prayer rugs to the Sliema front yesterday after the planning authority sealed off their place of worship. The Muslims said the Malta Environment and Planning Authority had locked them out of their flat in Sliema where they used to pray, so they decided to take their cause outside.

“We are not here to protest or threaten violence but to express our fundamental human right to gather in prayer,” Bader Zina, one of the leaders, said. According to Mepa, a number of complaints had been received by neighbours and the flat did not have a licence to be used as a place of worship.

The Muslims, many of whom Maltese, were dressed in traditional clothing. They had a permit and police protection and said this might become a regular appointment until their flat was reopened.

This behaviour did not go down well with a group of Maltese onlookers who warned that if this happened again “there will be trouble”.

“Malta is a Catholic country. They have no right to come here and pray in front of us. I don’t care what they do in the privacy of their own home but not here,” one Maltese woman said.

“We’ve had enough. If you were to do the same in their country they would stone you. I can’t understand how they could have been given a permit for this, including police presence and all!” her husband added, visibly disturbed by what he saw.

There was another group, which immigrated to Australia in the 1980s.

Their story was a bit different. 

Using data from the 2001 Census, this paper finds that Lebanese Muslim households are large and much more likely to be poor than are all households, or than Lebanese Christian households. It also finds that Lebanese Muslim men have low levels of education, relatively high levels of unemployment, and a very high tendency not to be in paid work.

And then there were the gang-rapists, criminals and murderers.

Quite a contrast in immigration stories… Quite a contrast indeed.
