AUSTRALIA Day, and its annual attempts to define what it means to be Australian, formerly saw us subject to clichés about barbecues, beer, beaches and bronzed bodies.
We now live in a different time.
For the family and friends of all eight Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan, perpetually linked by tragic loss and unlimited pride, Australia Day is an opportunity to consider anew who we are, and why we embark on what we do.
Thanks Tim Blair for remembering our heroes. Here’s more

Just in thanks to Darrin:
And while we remember our heroes, our enemies are celebrating the spread of Islam in Australia:
That’s right folks, on this day, the celebration of our great and glorious nation, the Muslims of Kingsgrove’s unwanted mosque are not flying the Australia flag, they are flying the Jihad flag.
Â
This particular flag is known as the ‘Caliphate flag’. The Arabic on the flag is known as the Shahada(confession of faith), being the first of (five) pillars of Islam La ilaha illa Allah wa-Muhammad rasul Allah. (There is no god but God and Muhammad is the prophet of God). This is the battle standard of the Islamic armies, the flag of Jihad.
The flag and its mosque have been built in an industrial estate in the Sydney suburb of Kingsgrove, the flag is raised as a symbol of Islamic supremacy and to intimidate those who would protest. According to people who work in the estate, the construction was completed during the Christmas break, so when people returned to work they discovered to their dismay that a mosque had been built in the midst.
Now with the thousands Muslims descending on the site, business has become all but impossible, with vehicles being parked in loading zones, non-parking zones, nature strips and in front of driveways, intimidation of female workers and harassment of business owners, neither the council, state and federal MPs nor the Police have the slightest inclination of doing anything about it. Here is a statement from a distressed business owner in the estate:
