Canon Michael Ainsworth, a priest and colleague of mine just a couple of miles from my rectory in the City of London, was recently attacked in his churchyard by three youths. Michael suffered two black eyes, cuts and bruises. He was taken into hospital and his wife Janina, also a priest, said: “It’s obvious that the attack on Michael does contain a religious element.” It certainly is obvious: his attackers shouted, “You f*kcing priest!” as they beat him up.

* Muslims see the West as decadent and degenerated, without values, Christianity in decline, a tired civilization that is in decay and ready for the the final conquest. Because all the world belongs to Allah and the spoils belong to the followers of the prophet, who are commanded to kill and die to make Islam the only religion .

* Christianophobia comes to the East End

This is the second time that Michael’s church has been attacked. After the Good Friday service last year, louts threw bricks through the windows. A parishioner, Susan Crocker, said: “It’s not out of the blue – it’s a recurrent problem.”

Well, it’s clear that the yobs who attacked Michael were Muslims. To their credit, the local Muslim leaders have tacitly admitted this by publicly deploring the crime. So why were the police, and much of the media, so vague as to call these thugs “Asians”? If I smashed the windows of a Brick Lane curry house and gave the manager two black eyes, you can be sure the police and the papers wouldn’t describe me as a “European”.

Of course the authorities excuse their evasiveness by saying it’s to preserve good racial and community relationships, forgetting that it was Michael’s attackers who first damaged these relationships and that appeasement always encourages worse violence in the long run.

This attack was one small example of the persecution being endured by the Church worldwide. On four continents Islamic militants are attacking and sometimes murdering Christians and burning down churches. Why do the archbishops and bishops not lead mass Christian demonstrations against these atrocities? Instead, we have to observe the filigree intelligence of the Archbishop of Canterbury as it operates on the precise relation between English law and some “unavoidable” accommodation with sharia. He, with his whole hierarchy, strains at gnats and swallows camels.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian archbishop said that Dr Williams’s words hardly made things better for Christians persecuted under sharia in his country. “Their lives,” he said, “are at the very least unbearable.” If Dr Williams is so intelligent, shouldn’t he have known beforehand that his remarks would only give encouragement to the fanatics? If I tried to walk down the main street in Riyadh wearing my clerical collar, the religious police would throw me into jail. In Britain we allow Muslims to build huge mosques in prominent places such as Regent’s Park. What does this say about the relationship between Christianity and Islam worldwide?

Urgent though it is, the threat from a murderous jihad is not the worst we have to face at Easter 2008. Any civilisation has a hope of defending itself against even the most ruthless enemy so long as it preserves the integrity of its own culture and traditions. But for 40 years our governments in Britain have done nothing but undermine the essential quality of our way of life. Those elected to defend the realm have destroyed it. The shepherds are hirelings.

The authority of Parliament is a joke in an age ruled by spin and the Prime Minister’s gang of party interest. New Labour has created its own client state out of millions on benefits and 800,000 new civil servants, bribed by the sort of job security and pension entitlements long vanished in the private sector. Public services are near collapse – try getting anywhere by road or rail this holiday weekend. The NHS is a disgrace. “State education” is an oxymoron. The Government loses our national records and lately there have been convictions for vote-rigging.

We might have expected the Church to resist the decay, but instead it has connived with the destructive sexual and social revolution begun in the 1960s. Back then, I voted for homosexuality to be decriminalised. But this meant “between consenting adults in private” – where “between” meant two, “adults” meant men over 21 and “private” meant behind locked doors. I did not foresee the obscene and coercive “Gay Pride” pantomimes that now disfigure our high streets.

Who would have thought we would live to see the Bishop of Hereford fined £47,000 and made to attend a re-education course because he refused to employ a practising homosexual in his diocese’s youth services? How long before I am carted from the pulpit to the nick for preaching that sodomy is not morally equivalent to Christian marriage?

I voted also for abortion law reform, because I was told it would put an end to squalid back-street terminations. I did not think I would see the result: 200,000 abortions every year and most as a form of contraception.

We imagine we can ditch Christianity and yet the good things we have inherited in our way of life will continue. They will not. Christianity formed Western civilisation and is so consubstantial with it that if Christianity goes, the lot goes with it. Let T?S Eliot, writing in 1934, give us a text to think about this Easter: “Do you need to be told that even such modest attainments as you can boast in the way of polite society will hardly survive the Faith to which they owe their significance?”

Taha Abdul-Basser, the Muslim chaplain at Harvard, said both episodes were indicative of the growing number of Muslims in the United States.

“There are some people who are not just comfortable that Muslims, by virtue of the change of demographics, are going to become more and more visible,” he said.

Seven in French custody for suspected ties with radical Islamists

PARIS: Five suspected radical Islamists who allegedly trained for combat in hopes of joining the Iraqi insurgency were being held for questioning in southern France, police and judicial officials said Thursday.

Authorities believe they had been in contact with radical Islamists who allegedly trained to fight in Iraq by firing weapons in the woods of eastern France. Those suspects were rounded up in a November sweep.

Preliminary charges were filed against five of the November suspects for “criminal conspiracy with a terrorist organization,” a broad charge often used in terror-related cases in France. Officials said the group had not made definite travel plans for Iraq, but was training to fight there.

Woman Goes for Leg Operation, Gets New Anus Instead

A German retiree is taking a hospital to court after she went in for a leg operation and got a new anus instead, the Daily Telegraph is reporting.

The woman woke up to find she had been mixed up with another patient suffering from incontinence who was to have surgery on her sphincter.

The clinic in Hochfranken, Bavaria, has since suspended the surgical team.

Now the woman is planning to sue the hospital. She still needs the leg operation and is searching for another hospital to do it.

A huge mosque begun more than 30 years ago by the late Ugandan dictator Idi Amin has opened in the Ugandan capital.
The mosque is named after Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi who helped finance its construction when funds ran low.

As Libya’s leader opened the mosque, which holds some 15,000 worshippers and dominates Kampala’s skyline, a large crowd chanted “long live Gaddafi”.

Amin, who lived in Saudi Arabia after he fled Uganda in 1979, dreamed of building Africa’s largest mosque.

A number of other African heads of state attended the ceremony, including the presidents of Somalia, Zanzibar and Djibouti.

Police said the man was ‘pretending’ to be female

An armed robber disguised as a Muslim woman has stolen jewellery from a shop in the West Midlands.
Police said the man went in to the Friend Jewellers in Cape Hill, Smethwick, wearing a burka and pushing an empty children’s buggy.

Police said the Asian man was joined in the store by four other Asian men who were all equipped with hammers.

They sprayed four staff members with an unknown substance and smashed display cabinets before fleeing in two cars.

The burka is a traditional form of Islamic dress for women consisting of a full body covering that also obscures the face.

Staff in the shop were not seriously hurt.

The owner of the shop is now offering an undisclosed reward for any information which leads to a conviction.

Probe after second burka robbery

Officers looking for a man who raided a jewellers while wearing a burka are investigating a similar incident.
A man thought to be wearing a burka threatened a security driver in Birmingham on 14 March with what is thought to be a firearm before fleeing.

Last Thursday, an armed robber pushing a child’s buggy and disguised as a woman in a burka went to the Friends Jewellers in Smethwick, West Midlands.

He was joined by four other men who smashed cabinets before fleeing.

Swiss minister sparks veil outcry

Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey has been widely criticised for donning a white headscarf to meet Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Well-known for her stand on women’s rights, she has provoked headlines such as “Just like a submissive woman”.

Socialist MP Maria Roth-Bernasconi said it was irritating that she had angered feminists in Iran.

Ms Calmy-Rey said she was observing protocol. “When you are a guest you respect local customs,” she said.

* Great. When dealing with Cannibals you share a meal with them. When dealing with Nazi’s you help them shove a Jew in the oven…when dealing with Muhammedans you strap on ….. got it…!

Social Democrat MP Liliane Maury Pasquier accepted that customs had to be observed.

But she was quoted by one newspaper complaining that the minister should have shown solidarity with “the women who fight against wearing the headscarf”.

Gas controversy

The minister also prompted controversy by signing a multi-billion dollar natural gas deal. The United States had complained that Switzerland was sending the wrong message when Tehran was subject to UN sanctions.

Ms Calmy-Rey insisted the deal between Swiss company EGL and the National Iranian Gas Export company did not violate sanctions.

Swiss daily Le Matin said on Wednesday it was shocked that Switzerland’s “icon of a liberated woman” had been transformed into an image of one who was oppressed.

Its tone changed on Thursday, however, by acknowledging that the foreign minister had not really had much choice.

A source told the paper that, without wearing a headscarf, she probably would not have been able to have her meetings with the Iranian leadership.

Wichman sent an e-mail to theMuslim Student’s Association.

The e-mail was in response to the students’ protest

of the Danish cartoons

that portrayed the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist.

The group had complained the cartoons were

‘hate speech.’

Enter Professor Wichman.

In his e-mail, he said the following:

Dear Moslem Association,

As a professor of Mechanical Engineering here at MSU

I intend to protest your protest.

I am offended not by cartoons,

but by more mundane things like beheadings of civilians,

cowardly attacks on public buildings, suicide murders,

murders of Catholic priests

(the latest in Turkey ),

burnings of Christian churches,

the continued persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt ,

the imposition of Sharia law on non-Muslims,

the rapes of Scandinavian girls and women

(called ‘whores’ in your culture),

the murder of film directors in Holland,

and the rioting and looting in Paris France.

This is what offends me,

a soft-spoken person and academic,

and many, many of my colleagues.

I counsel you dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal,

and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems

to be very aware of this as you proceed

with your infantile ‘protests.’

If you do not like the values of the West

– see the 1st Amendment –

you are free to leave.

I hope for God’s sake

that most of you choose that option

Please return to your ancestral homelands

They’re demanding that Wichman be reprimanded

and the university impose mandatory diversity training for faculty

and mandate a seminar on hate and discrimination for all freshmen.

Now the local chapter of CAIR has jumped into the fray.

CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations,

apparently doesn’t believe that the good professor

had the right to express his opinion.

(unlike the broad latitude given to the Islamists to spew their hate-filled raves)

For its part,

the university is standing its ground

in support of Professor Wichman,

saying the e-mail was private,

and they don’t intend to publicly condemn his remarks.

“Many brothers here and abroad – more from abroad than from here – have called to ask me about the ‘Opposite Direction’ [show on Al-Jazeera TV], and that woman [Wafa Sultan], who leveled accusations against Islam and the Muslims, and cursed Allah, His Prophet, the Islamic nation, the shari’a, and the Islamic faith and culture. She did not omit anything. She was insolent and stopped at nothing.

“I know that our colleague Dr. Faysal Al-Qassem apologized on the following show. I did not watch the [original] show, but I was given a recording. She said unbearable, ghastly things that made my hair stand on end. She had the audacity to publicly curse Allah, His Prophet, the Koran, the history of Islam, and the Islamic nation. She did not spare anything.

“It was all based on ignorance. If only she had some knowledge… But she doesn’t have any knowledge. She doesn’t know the Koran or the Sunna. When she cited a hadith to back up her statements, she used a hadith that scholars consider unreliable.”

Ain’t it always the way? I’ll let you in on a little secret: any and every critic of Islamic jihad and Islamic supremacism is “ignorant.” Any Hadith that someone like Wafa Sultan (or someone like me) quotes is ipso facto unreliable, just as any Qur’an quotation she might adduce would be ripped out of context.

* Right. Like ‘kill the unbelievers wherever you find them’ and ‘wipe the unbelievers out to the last…’  But what has that got to do with the Torah..?

“The Prophet said: ‘Allah has given me sustenance under the shadow of my sword.’ This hadith is unreliable. The Prophet did not get sustenance by the sword. If she had read the Koran, she would have known that it forbids killing people: ‘Anyone who kills another person for any reason other than manslaughter or spreading corruption in the land – it is as if he has killed all of mankind.’

* Yeah! But why doesn’t Qaradhawi cite the whole verse? Why does he stop here?

Robert Spencer explains: “Other than manslaughter or spreading corruption in the land [fasaad].” That’s a big exception right there, particularly given the Islamic understanding of what constitutes fasaad. Qaradawi is quoting Qur’an 5:32, which, incidentally, immediately precedes the verse about amputation that Wafa quoted, 5:33. 

* Strange that there are so many ‘unreliable hadiths’ but none of them must be omitted, and no reform of the belief-system of Islam must ever be allowed.

Negative consequences

Continuing interruptions have a negative effect on any statement because the audience quickly becomes absorbed by the interruptions, and both speaker and audience can quickly lose track of the speaker’s argument. Worse, the speaker is often reduced to simply stating his main conclusion without being able to provide his supporting evidence. In this case, without the benefit of the quotations from the Cairo Declaration, a well-reasoned argument was reduced to sounding like mere polemics. Objections also act as a warning to others against raising sensitive issues and have a chilling effect on those who might wish to cover similar ground. No doubt all of these effects are well understood by the Islamic delegates.

More worrying still are the implications for rational discussion of Islamic interpretations of human rights. Any criticism, indeed, any discussion of Shari’ah law at the Human Rights Council is now considered an “insult to Islam”. The problem is the extremely close relationship between Islam as a religion, and Sharia which, although a system of law, holds a central position in that faith. The continuing efforts by the Islamic states at the Human Rights Council, in the UN General Assembly and elsewhere to silence “defamation” of religion can be seen in this context. Should these efforts succeed, any criticism of the Shari’ah, of its entrenched inequalities or brutal punishments will be condemned as defamation of Islam. Rational discussion – indeed any mention of the Shari’ah – will have become impossible.

For the time being, then, the Islamic States can continue to pretend that Islamic declarations of human rights are compatible with international standards. But that claim should seen for what it is.

Italy takes al Qaeda’s Pope threat seriously-agency

ROME, March 20 (Reuters) – Italian security officials are treating Osama bin Laden’s new accusations against Pope Benedict as a serious threat, Ansa news agency said on Thursday, quoting a source at the interior ministry’s anti-terrorism unit.

An interior ministry spokesman said security officials will meet on Friday to examine the Al Qaeda leader’s taped message, in which he said offending cartoons of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad were part of a “new crusade” involving Pope Benedict.

And they are worried with good reason. The Pope certainly isn’t leading a new Crusade, but Rome is nevertheless the apple of the jihadist eye. One of the most influential Muslim clerics in the world, Sheikh al-Qaradawi, said this a few years ago:

The friends of the Prophet heard that two cities would be conquered by Islam, Romiyya and Constantinople, and the Prophet said that ‘Hirqil [i.e. Constantinople] would be conquered first.’ Romiyya is Rome, the capital of Italy, and Constantinople was the capital of the state of Byzantine Rome, which today is Istanbul. Push to tackle ‘white flight’

REFUGEES should be housed across a wider spread of suburbs to halt the so-called “white flight” from some government schools, according to a senior Federal Government MP.

* But that “white flight” link is again a misnomer, which encourages sloppy, stereotypical thinking on race. The “whites” fleeing ghettoised schools actually include many Asian children.

Laurie Ferguson, parliamentary secretary for multicultural affairs, said white flight — where Anglo-European parents shun state schools that have a high proportion of students from other racial backgrounds — had become a big challenge for multicultural Australia.

“People fear there is a monoculture in some suburbs. They believe there is an over-dominance of some cultures in schools, which is denigrating the quality of education,” Mr Ferguson told The Age.

“So they are withdrawing their kids from government schools and sending them to religious or selective high schools. This leads to further concentration of marginalised communities in government schools and the further stigmatisation of these schools.”

The term “white flight” was coined in the US. It was applied to schools after desegregation began in the 1960s, when many white people who could afford private schools pulled their children from mixed public schools.

Mr Ferguson said the “concept of white flight from the government school system” had now become a big challenge in Australia, particularly in western Sydney and parts of Melbourne.

A confidential survey conducted by the NSW Secondary Principals Council in 2006 raised concerns about white flight undermining the public education system and threatening social cohesion.

The report showed the percentage of Anglo-European students in public schools had decreased by a third in western NSW, by 42% in North Sydney and 37% in New England.

Mr Ferguson told The Age more needed to be done to avoid children from places such as Africa, who had grown up in refugee camps and had limited education, being so heavily concentrated in some areas and schools. “Deliberate policy decisions” needed to be made about diversifying the location of housing for refugees and humanitarian entrants.

He said settlement workers should also try harder to find private rental properties for their clients in a broader range of areas, rather than simply dealing with the same real estate agents.

Mr Ferguson said that in contrast to the hostility of the former Howard government, the Rudd Government was committed to making multiculturalism work, and he had been talking with the Immigration Department about how to tackle white flight.

He said while people could not be forced to live in certain areas and rent was prohibitively high in wealthy suburbs, more could be done to broaden resettlement.

“There also needs to be work from state education departments, otherwise we are going to see a worsening spiral of high unemployment, stigmatisation by employers and denigration of and further retreat from public education,” Mr Ferguson said.

The president of the Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals, Brian Burgess, said the exodus from state schools in Victoria was “more like a middle-class flight” than a white flight.

“It has more to do with middle-class people living in lower socio-economic areas moving into private education or what they would view to be a more upmarket secondary school in the next suburb,” he said.

But teachers at racially diverse schools, who asked not to be named, told The Age white flight was occurring in Melbourne.

* “Australia needs more Africans”

Meanwhile, Mr Ferguson said one of his first tasks as parliamentary secretary had been to reassure the African community the Government would continue to accept African refugees, after former immigration minister Kevin Andrews claimed the Sudanese were struggling to integrate. “The biggest area of damage control was to try to counter the anxiety in the African community after Andrews’ statements,” Mr Ferguson said.

He said Africans had interpreted Mr Andrews’ “reprehensible” comments to mean the Government was completely cutting the African refugee intake.

The Immigration Department was also composing a multicultural policy statement to replace the former government’s policy.

John Howard was famously suspicious of the word “multicultural”, saying he preferred to use “integration”. He also dropped “Multicultural Affairs” from the Immigration Department’s title.

Mr Ferguson said that while it would be nice if the name was reinstated, the fact he had been appointed secretary for multicultural affairs and was pushing the agenda underlined its importance to the Government.
