Women in New Zealand were encouraged to wear hijabs in a misguided and counter-productive, albeit well-intentioned, bit of activism.

The hijab, and other Muslim veils, such as the niqab, burqa and chador, is imbued with deep symbolism and represents modesty culture, which requires women to cover up, marking those who don’t.

At its core, modesty culture is deeply anti-women.

There’s good reason why the majority of Muslim women in the West choose not to wear the hijab and why women’s rights campaigners living under Islam fight, at great personal risk, against its imposition.

Women are not risking their life and liberty to protest against a piece of cloth, it represents much more and we betray these brave women when we embrace the hijab as a symbol of diversity and harmony. That’s the last thing it is.

Women in countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are required to cover up by law or social convention and there are grim repercussions for those who fail to comply.

A Melbourne academic has been sentenced to 10 years in a notorious Iranian prison for suspected espionage charges.

Australian diplomats are pleading for the release of Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, a University of Melbourne expert on Middle Eastern politics who was arrested almost a year ago on secret charges believed to be related to spying.

Her students and colleagues described her last night as “one of the loveliest people” who was always “supportive and encouraging”.

A fellow Middle East expert said: “It is appalling that she has been imprisoned. Yet another academic in the region being targeted”.

She is one of three Australians jailed in the Islamic republic’s Evin Prison, used by the regime to hold political prisoners including British-Iranian dual citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has also been locked up on spying charges.

Experts fear Iran has detained the foreigners to try to orchestrate a prisoner swap for an Iranian woman who was arrested in Australia in 2017 and then extradited to the US on charges of evading sanctions. Tommy Robinson has been released prison nine weeks after he wasjailed for contempt of court.

The English Defence League founder, was pictured with a beard and long hair as he left HMP Belmarsh in south-east London on Friday.

In a video posted online following his release, Robinson said: “First stop, hairdressers.”

The 36-year-old, real nameStephen Yaxley-Lennon, waved at hundreds of his supporters gathered outside the jail and smiled as he walked free.

CIA analysts, like their counterparts all over the West, assumed that bin Laden could never pull off a major operation not because he was a bearded guy in a cave, but because they assumed that the vast majority of Muslims rejected his understanding of Islam, and that he would therefore meet hindrances in recruitment and a great deal more. Today, that position is institutionalized within the CIA and other agencies, and will eventually lead to more jihad murders of more Americans.
