The grainy video, taken on a mobile phone and played in a British court last year, shows a young woman lying on a bed, telling how her father had tried to kill her that day. She says he gave her some brandy, pulled the curtains and asked her to turn around, at which point she fled the house. It sounds far-fetched, but Banaz Mahmod knew what she was talking about. Within a month, the 19-year-old was dead.

Mahmod, an Iraqi Kurd whose family arrived in Britain as asylum seekers when she was 10, had been forced to marry a Kurdish man from the Midlands. But the marriage was a disaster and Mahmod fled to the family home in south London, saying her husband had raped her.

Back in London she fell in love with another man, Rahmat Sulemani, an Iranian Kurd who her family said was not a good enough Muslim. One day she kissed him on a street. A Kurdish bystander photographed the kiss on a mobile phone and showed it to her uncle, Ari Mahmod. He called a family meeting where it was decided the couple would be murdered.

Three months after she disappeared, Mahmod’s naked body was found in a case buried in a Birmingham backyard. The gang of young men her uncle had recruited to kill her had also raped and tortured her, and left the bootlace they used to strangle her around her neck.

“We got it all wrong”

Another U.S. threat assessment has been issued that refuses to identify the enemy threatening us, and instead defines the enemy only as “extremists”. Today’s annual threat assessment from the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) fails to use the terms “Jihad”, “Jihadist”, “Islamism”, or “Islamist” in identifying the enemy. The question must be asked how the U.S. can meaningfully assess threats, if it can’t even identify the enemy. The term “radical Islamic” (used twice) and “militant Islamic” (used once) is the only term close to “Islamist”, and such terms as “radical” and “militant” have very different meanings to different people. Predominantly, when describing the enemy, the DNI annual assessment today uses the term “extremist(s)” (used 18 times) or “extremism” (used twice). In effect, the DNI views that America is fighting a war against “extremism”.

This follows last week’s State of the Union message where the term “extremist” was the primary definition of the enemy, with the term extremism, extremist(s) used nine times in defining the enemy (see recent columns on this by Counterterrorism Blog’s Andrew Cochran and by Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, the founder and Chairman of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy). Our national leadership continues to ignore political “Islamism” as defined in the 9/11 Commission report, and refuses to make the distinction, as per Dr. Jasser, between “personal spiritual Islam from political Islam”, but instead addresses threats from ambiguously defined “extremists” as its primary concern.

Former Pakistani generals: “the war for the independence of Kashmir cannot be won without jihad”

Many times, as I travel around the country and give talks about the nature and magnitude of the jihad threat, I encounter people who tell me that what I am characterizing as jihad struggles around the world are actually simple nationalist struggles for self-determination. And that is, indeed, the conventional wisdom — witness the mainstream media’s consistent designation of jihadists in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Kashmir and elsewhere as “insurgents,” “militants,” and the like. Never “jihadists.” The conventional wisdom is that Islam has nothing to do with any of those conflicts. This story is a tough one for that conventional wisdom, for it frames the Kashmir nationalist struggle within the context of jihad, thus indicating that these Pakistani generals do not believe that the two are the same thing, and don’t think that their audience confuses the two, either.

Do Not Apologize for Cartoons of Muhammad

So long as men are free to criticize, free to dissent, free to present their own ideas without fear of coercive reprisals–the fight for a rational culture has a chance. But the crisis over cartoons of Mohammad threatens to wipe out freedom of speech. Our leaders have shamefully sided with the mobs chanting death threats and torching embassies. Free speech, our leaders say, is not an absolute, its exercise must not offend religious beliefs–it is a right, in other words, that we are not free to exercise. So far, no Western government has declared that anyone, on domestic or foreign soil, who threatens a citizen with death for speaking out will be dealt with by the full force of the government.

If the threats, riots and killings fomented by Islamic states are allowed to proceed–if they are allowed to compel Western thinkers into self-censorship–the first to be silenced will be the critics of Islam. And then the critics of religion. And then everyone else.

Because of the profound default of our governments, it is incumbent on citizens to defend our hard-won rights. We should all demand that our governments staunchly defend our freedom of speech. And every media outlet should publish the cartoons–as an act of defiance against those who claim the right to silence any one of us, as a show of support for those who are brave enough to defy the killers, and as a practical means of defusing the immediate threat, since the killers will have not just a handful but thousands of individuals to behead.

RABIAH HUTCHINSON, the Mudgee-born grandmother accused of being the “grand dame” of extremist jihadis in Australia, says she has limited sympathy for the victims of the Bali bombings because those holidaying on the Indonesian island engaged in pedophilia and drug taking.

And her close friend, Raisah bint Alan Douglas, another Australian convert to radical Islam who also married a suspected terrorist supporter, has praised Osama bin Laden, saying he followed a “correct” version of Islam.

The women are featured in a documentary to be aired on ABC television tonight, Jihad Sheilas.

Ms Hutchinson is a former hippie who converted to Islam in Indonesia in 1973. Ms Douglas also hails from country NSW, Dubbo, and has been married five times to Muslim men, including her current husband Omar Abdi Mohamed, a suspected terrorist financier who was deported from the US.

Ms Hutchinson was schooled by the leaders of Jemaah Islamiah, Abdullar Sungkar and Abu Bakar Bashir, at one time marrying the head of JI’s Australian wing in the 1990s.

“I have the greatest respect for them,” she said of the two men, adding she believed Abu Bakar Bashir was not involved in the Bali attacks which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

“Do I feel for the people who died? Not as much as for those 200 Afghani people that gave me and my children shelter,” she said. “Why? Because they were holidaying in someone’s country, sometimes engaging in child pornography or pedophilia or drug taking.”

The 200 Afghans Ms Hutchinson referred to were villagers who she said were massacred by US-led forces following the September 11, 2001, attacks because they refused to give her up to the authorities.

Ms Hutchinson had taken her six children to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to experience a pure Islamic state.

While Ms Hutchinson wants to leave the country but cannot, Ms Douglas retains her passport and normally lives in Kenya with her fifth husband.

Ms Douglas spoke openly of her admiration for bin Laden. He followed the “correct” and “undiluted” version of Islam, she said. “It’s not a bad thing for Islam, what Osama bin Laden has said. I believe that he has woken a lot of Muslims up to the oppression they were under but didn’t realise it.”

Both women, according to Ms Hutchinson’s solicitor, are furious about the documentary, believing they were misled into taking part.

Brisbane Terrorist Talkfest

A conference with the title ‘The Challenges and Opportunities of Islam in the West: The Case of Australia’ is being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Bank, Brisbane on March 3-5, 2008. The keynote speaker will be Professor Tariq Ramadan, President of the European Muslim Network (based in Holland) who was denied entry to the US in 2006 because of the material support he gave to terrorist groups. Ramadan’s links to terrorists do not seem to have concerned the organisers of the conference. The advertisement for it reads on the surface like one for any old conference – it could be a gathering of fishing experts, naval engineers or of members of the Benevolent Society. The Jihad jamboree purports to examine Islam in Australia, a hail fellow well met kind of warm hazy congenial get together by just real regular nice guys. But make no mistake, this is the underbelly of the Islamic snake hiding its poison but poisonous nevertheless, the pincers of the scorpion ready to strike.This is Islamic duplicity in full swing. The conference title itself is ambiguous – ‘The challenges and opportunities of Islam in the west’ could refer to the challenges Islam faces in ADAPTING to the west, and ‘the opportunities’ magnanimously given to Muslims to start a new life in the Judeo-Christian west, away from their violent Islamic societies of origin. That’s one take on it, but of course highly unlikely. Another interpretation could be that the title refers to the opportunities that Muslims have in the west in pushing for Islamic ascendancy, and ‘the challenges’ could refer to the various ways in which Islam would hide its true colours, using the west’s openness to subvert that very society. Now which interpretation do you think fits the bill?

Whichever one you choose, the title is so obfuscating, that one would be forgiven for reading into it as many interpretations as one wanted. One of the subheadings of the advertisement ‘The role and contributions of Muslims in Western societies’ is macabre and ironic, given that Islam has had an unceasingly violent history from its inception. What contributions? As David Price pointed out in ‘ The Closed circle’, his excellent study of the Islamic closed world and rejection of speculative thinking, rich Muslims go to the west to have their heart operations done because their own societies do not foster the freedom of thought to allow for scientific and technological development. Perhaps Islamic contributions are a kind of pickled and preserved seventh century brutality, a terrorist time machine, that has its unique interest in being so obdurate and unlike any other belief system.

How naïve of Griffith Uni. to host such a talk, advertising it at the same time as terrorists in other parts of the world advocate our demise, and boast of conquering us. (Reference)

The Bali Bombers will NEVER be executed

THE executions of three 2002 Bali bombers have been pushed back again, after they won a last-ditch bid for a review of their cases.

Survivors and relatives of some of the 88 Australians who died in the bombings erupted in anger, after again learning they would have to wait longer for justice.

“I am bitterly disappointed that the Indonesian government is letting these criminals’ needs be met,” said Perth man Peter Hughes, who survived horrific injuries in the nightclub attacks organised by the trio.

“I think maybe the Indonesian government should show some strength and put these guys to death as they should be … (They) are starting to get a hero status now.”

Melbourne man David Stewart, whose son Anthony died in the bombings, said he expected more delays, and accused the Indonesian government of being scared of further bombings.

“The Indonesian government don’t want to execute them because they are afraid of more bombings,” he said.

SCOTLAND YARD is braced for a fresh wave of possible terrorist attacks against public transport after a group of suspected Islamist suicide bombers were arrested in a secret security operation at Gatwick airport.

Six Pakistani men were held under anti-terrorism laws 10 days ago after they flew in from Barcelona. The arrests were prompted by a tip-off from the Spanish intelligence services after the discovery of a suspected Al-Qaeda terror cell in the city. The cell is alleged to have planned to detonate suicide bombs on the Barcelona Metro. The Spanish warned a similar attack was being planned here.

The six Pakistanis were taken to Paddington Green police station in west London and were questioned by detectives from the Yard’s counter-terrorism unit. After being held overnight they were driven under police escort back to the airport and escorted onto a flight back to Pakistan.

Calgary Muslim women file human rights complaint against imam

CALGARY – Three Calgary Muslim women have filed a human rights complaint against a local imam, alleging they were treated unfairly at a recent meeting.

Qasira Shaheen, Robina Butt and Shugufta Iftikhar say they were discriminated against by Syed Soharwardy at an open house in November at the Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Centre.

“We were discriminated against as women and were treated poorly, differently, negatively and adversely,” they wrote in the complaint, filed in December with the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

They claim they weren’t allowed to ask questions, were physically and verbally threatened, were made to sit in the back of the hall and were eventually forced to leave.

It is alleged they are not only failing to help desperate women trying to flee abuse and arranged marriages but are actively encouraging punishment for those they believe are breaking traditional taboos.

It said: “The MCB has sought to block legislation aimed at ending honour-based violence. Almost all women’s groups interviewed for this report say that the MCB has done little or nothing to end honour-based violence…

U.K.: 15-year-old Pakistani girl tricked into marriage, forced into prostitution by mother-in-law

A GIRL of 15 was tricked into a “telephone marriage” ceremony to a Sheffield man with a mental age of five in a ceremony recognised by sharia (Islamic law).

* “Instead, she was married to a 40-year-old, unemployed, disabled man with the mental age of a 5-year-old.”

* …and he was the pride of the Muslim neighborhood….

When the girl arrived from Pakistan expecting to meet the handsome man she had been shown in a photograph, she found that he was 40 years old, unemployed and disabled.

To make matters worse, her mother-in-law decided to exploit her attractive looks by forcing her into prostitution.

The family invited men to the family home to rape her before she managed to escape to the police by bolting through the front door. She was taken into care and now lives in a refuge.

The case is highlighted in a report by the Centre for Social Cohesion, which has found that policemen, councillors and taxi drivers are turning a blind eye or even conniving in enforcing the Asian community’s strict “moral code” on young women.

The Sharia Council, based at Regents Park Mosque in London, is the oldest such institution in the country. Its scholars or sheikhs have been ruling on all aspects of Muslim life for 25 years. The Council has been trying to get Muslim personal laws recognised by the state but claims that all its attempts to engage with the Government have led nowhere.

Senior Judge and Secretary of the Council, Sheikh Hassan, says: ‘We know that if Sharia laws are implemented then you can change this country into a haven of peace. Because once a thief’s hand is cut off, nobody is going to steal. If only once an adulterer is stoned, nobody is going to commit this crime at all. There would be no rapist[s] at all. This is why we say that, yes, we want to offer it to the British society.

Pupils in Britain, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will link up to learn how much they have in common with each other

BRITISH schools are to be twinned with madrasahs in Pakistan to show pupils there how much they have in common with children in the West and to combat extreme Islamist ideology.

The British Council is to put £6m into linking British schools with classrooms in countries where children may be at risk of being groomed by Muslim extremists. The programme will operate in Afghanistan, Iraq, Indonesia and Pakistan, including the largely lawless North West Frontier Province, regarded as a stronghold for the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

Stars and Stripes, The U.S. military is funding the construction of Islamic schools, or madrassas, in the east of Afghanistan in an attempt to stem the tide of young people going to radical religious schools in Pakistan, London’s Financial Times reported Wednesday.

U.S. reconstruction cash has helped establish two state-run madrassas in the province of Khost, and a third is on its way, the Times reported.
