BANNU, PAKISTAN and VANCOUVER — Taliban insurgents active in Pakistan’s lawless tribal region have offered to free a Canadian woman held since November in return for a $375,000 (U.S.) ransom. 

The demand came in an interview near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border with Qari, a man who preferred to identify himself only by his first name.

Qari says he’s a close aide of Gul Bahadur, the Taliban head in the volatile North Waziristan region who is alleged to be responsible for the kidnapping of Beverly Giesbrecht, a West Vancouver woman who was in the area working as a freelance journalist.

Sheik comments: it is more than likely that Khadija sees this as her personal jihad in order to finance the Taliban. It is unlikely that she has really been kidnapped or that the Taliban will kill her if ransom is not paid. We should ignore it and leave her where she is.

The very idea that because Al Qaeda was based in Afghanistan, Afghanistan has a special, irreplaceable importance in the “war against terrorism,” is false.

In the first place, the fact that Al Qaeda found Afghanistan under the Taliban (a Taliban nurtured by an American-supported Pakistan, and recognized by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates) useful does not mean that Al Qaeda can only regroup in Afghanistan. The terrorist attacks in London were not hatched by those trained in Afghanistan, but by people living in, raised in, Great Britain. Those who bombed the Atocha station in Madrid were not from Afghanistan. Those who killed Pim Fortuyn (a weak-minded Dutchman put up to it by Muslims) and Theo van Gogh were not trained in Afghanistan. The Chechens who seized the theatre in Moscow, or the school in Beslan, were not trained in Afghanistan. Anywhere there are Muslims, ready to participate in Jihad through violence, they will be able to find sufficient weaponry and bombs. Afghanistan is being endowed with a significance it does not possess.

Troops have arrived at the advanced medical facility at Camp Bastion in Helmand province and found themselves lying alongside their enemies.

Injured Taliban are routinely treated at the Camp Bastion Field Hospital in line with the Geneva Convention.

“My friends who were injured were waking up in the hospital to find Taliban in the bed next to them,” a serving soldier told the BBC.

“A lot of people are getting injured out there, and the last thing they want to see when they come round is the Taliban on the same ward. It’s just not right.”

Actually, the logic of the “militants” is quite consistent: just as the government is not fully  implementing sharia law (and thus must be overthrown), so are females in school alien to sharia (and thus must be prevented).

In the 30-minute video message, an individual calling himself Abu Talha Al-Alamani said the Germans were “gullible and naive” if they thought they could “escape unscathed when they are the third occupation force in Afghanistan.”

Germany Discovers a War in Afghanistan

For years, Germans have preferred to see their country’s presence in Afghanistan as armed development assistance. That myth is now becoming more difficult to maintain as the violence spreads to the north where the Germans are based.

This attack killed a German soldier in Kabul. Recently, there have been an increasing number of attacks on Germans in northern Afghanistan.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Map, News) – An Afghan official says a suicide bomber in northern Afghanistan has killed two German soldiers and five children.

 

The governor of Kunduz province, Mohammad Omar, says two other German soldiers and two children were wounded in the blast Monday.

NATO confirms that some of its soldiers were killed and wounded in the attack in the province’s Chahar Dara district.

Omar says the soldiers were patrolling on foot when the bomber riding a bicycle hit them.
