KRudd Saves Country by Passing Cigarette Tax

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is making a panicked ”tax grab” to pay for his addiction to spending, according to critics of his plan to ensure Australia becomes a world leader in “tobacco control.”

Mr Rudd unveiled yesterday a four-pronged strategy designed to reduce tobacco use but denied it was a smokescreen to divert attention from the debate over the Government decision to put off plans for an emissions trading scheme.

Smokers would pay $2.16 more for a 30-pack of cigarettes from today after the Government decided to raise the excise by 25 per cent.

The move was expected to encourage 87,000 Australians to quit smoking and generate $5billion over four years, helping to offset the cost of the Commonwealth’s reforms to the health and hospital system.

Don’t ask if they’re illegal

Sneaky, weak and irresponsible:

IMMIGRATION Department officials have been ordered to back off all non-essential visa checking, such as raids on brothels and illegal fruit pickers, as mainland detention centres are at risk of overflowing because of the constant transfer of asylum-seekers from Christmas Island. The Australian has learnt that Immigration Department compliance officers were told late last week to detain people only where necessary, because of the space pressure inside detention centres.

The instructions, which were issued verbally, not in writing, are understood to have been handed down last Thursday and Friday.

It is believed compliance officers were told to ease off all non-essential work and to detain people at airports only when absolutely necessary…

“Compliance officers have been asked to consider the impact of current detention capacity when planning their field operations, including looking at alternatives to detention,” (a) spokesman said.

And so to cover up the consequences of weakness, the Government weakens even further. And see once more how the guiding operational principle is Seeming.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has appointed Tony Burke as the nation’s first population minister, amid growing concerns the number of Australians will rise to unsustainable levels.

Mr Burke will be responsible for drawing up a national population strategy and will retain his other portfolio of agriculture, fisheries and forestry.

So now Burke is the Minister for Cows, Fish, Trees and People. Who’ll get Insects? Maybe that responsibility will fall to the underemployed bureaucrats previously involved in emissions trading.

Actually not. Just more spin and flip flop. He was for it before he was against it and visa versa….. No, the plan is not to stop the thousands of illegal welfare seekers who burn their boats on arrival in Australia, the plan is to appoint another bureaucrat to establish another bureaucracy.

Yes, the boats keep coming: Yet another, like never before and there are yet more asylum seekers on their way to the island, with a boat carrying 79 passengers and four crew “intercepted” on Friday.

THE federal government will consider slashing Australia’s annual migration intake to help tackle concerns about traffic congestion, housing, hospitals, water and the environment.

Just months after declaring himself in favour of a ”big Australia”, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday warned of ”legitimate concerns” with population growth and appointed Agriculture Minister Tony Burke as Australia’s first Population Minister.

Mr Burke has been given a year to develop the country’s first population plan, including a review of immigration levels.

The announcement came as another boatload of asylum seekers – the 102nd to be intercepted since Mr Rudd took office – was placed in detention at the Christmas Island facility, which has reportedly reached capacity.

Mr Rudd denied the new strategy was a smokescreen to divert attention from the recent boat arrivals, saying the idea for a population plan had come after ”extensive deliberations of the cabinet over the last month”. More

Rudd too weak on boat people even for the UN

When even the UN tells Rudd his weakness lures boat people, you know Rudd sure is weak:

UN High Commissioner for Refugees representatives met in Colombo last month to discuss the effect of the decision to strike a deal with 78 Sri Lankan asylum-seekers rescued from a floundering vessel last October and taken to Indonesia by the Australian Customs boat Oceanic Viking.

The government agreed to rapidly resettle all those on board deemed to be refugees, following a month-long standoff during which the asylum-seekers refused to leave the boat….

A high-ranking official aware of the February UNHCR meeting told The Australian yesterday the organisation had reviewed the decision in light of concerns over possible pull factors that might encourage further unregulated migration to Australia…

“(It was decided) it was a bad practice. There are Sri Lankan refugees who have been sitting in Indonesia for some time.

“When you’re faced with an emergency and have people demanding resettlement, the (UNHCR’s) position is you should not give in to that because it does give an incentive for people to try this irregular movement.”

“Irregular movement?”

Illegal welfare seekers are more regular than KRudd’s bowel movements. Gimme a break!

The news comes after two further boats were intercepted on Tuesday…

“Intercepted” is KRudd-speak for welcoming  Mohammedan welfare chasers….

A boat carrying asylum seekers has been intercepted north-west of Christmas Island…

It is believed 35 passengers and two crew members were on board.

The group will be taken to Christmas Island for identity, security and health checks. It is the fifth boat of asylum seekers picked up in Australian waters since last Sunday.

Please define the difference between “intercepted” and “welcomed”?

Another suspected asylum seeker boat has arrived off north-west Australia as the debate heats up on the future of the Christmas Island detention centre.

The latest arrival, a boat carrying 83 people, was intercepted yesterday by Australian authorities east of Christmas Island the same day a newspaper report claimed up to five-thousand detainees could be held on the island over four years.

And yet another again:

Another boat carrying asylum seekers has been intercepted in waters off the West Australian coast early sunday morning.

The government says the boat with 28 passengers and two crew members on board was intercepted north west of Adele Island.
