(ANSAmed) – ROME, JUNE 3 – According to the controversial Swiss intellectual and Islam scholar, Tariq Ramadan, a “change in attitude” and “effective and necessary action”, a “real and profound message of respect” but above all “humility” are what the Muslim world expects in the keynote speech that USA President Barack Obama will be making tomorrow in Cairo. In a statement sent to the press via email, Ramadan underlines how Obama has found himself having to “reverse the legacy” left by George W. Bush and his administration, who did not show “respect or fairness towards Muslims”.

Ramadan points out that, during his election campaign, Obama “often had to repeat that he was not a Muslim, as if that would have posed a problem for the American people”. Thus, “the first thing that can be expected” is that, by talking to the Muslim world, he will also be talking to the “US and the West”. Ramadan confirmed that during the first few months of his presidency Obama “has shown respect for Islam, announced the closure of Guantanamo and an end to torture, and adopted a firm stance against the Israeli government with regard to the building of settlements”. These are “positive steps”, but speeches “are not enough”. The USA “does not have a monopoly on good and evil”. Islam “is a great civilisation” and Obama “must announce that we all have something to learn from each other.” In stressing “ideal values” and calling for “human rights”, Obama must also “admit American mistakes, failures and contradictions” in pursuing these aims, and he must show “humility” in acknowledging that the USA “can and will do more in order to respect the values that they are calling for.” It is only in this way that he can say to Muslims that “they must fight against corruption, fundamentalism, dictatorships, discrimination against women and poor people”, and in order to be “listened to with a minimum of trust”. Ramadan concluded that Obama must make it understood that “after many years of deafness in Washington, he has finally listened”.

Bin Laden said Mr. Obama is “following in the footsteps” of his predecessor, George W. Bush, and is planting “new seeds of hatred” toward the United States in the Muslim world. The great Belgian orientalist Dr. Koenraad Elst, an expert on Islamic atrocities in India, has published a post at The Brussels Journal about stoning in Islam as a response to my essay Why Christians Accepted Greek Natural Philosophy, But Muslims Did Not. Here is what he has to say:

In 2006, I had a debate with Tariq Ramadan, the author of Western Muslims and the future of Islam. In the hypothetical event of a war between Egypt and Switzerland, for which community would he be prepared to die, I asked him.Mr Ramadan has dual citizenship. He’s an Egyptian by birth and a Swiss by naturalisation. His response was one of rage on different levels. Above all I think he was outraged that one should ask such a question. He refused to answer.

Mr Ramadan, like many other Muslims, may have two or more citizenships. From all that he expresses both in person and on paper, it is clear that his loyalty, above all, is to Islam. I do not doubt that he would die for Islam, like most Muslims, and that’s his prerogative. But what European countries have done is give citizenship to individuals who feel no obligation to share in their societies for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer and in the event of a catastrophe, sacrifice themselves.

No debate is more explosive than the debate on the future of Islam in Europe

In this way, they evade one of the chief criteria of citizenship. Political allegiance to the constitution of your country is the minimum requirement. It is this state of affairs that makes Christopher Caldwell’s bookReflections on the Revolution in Europe: Immigration and the West (Allen Lane, £17.99), which opens with the sentence, “Western Europe became a multi-ethnic society in a fit of absence of mind,” a chilling read.

“Infandous” alley-rat George Galloway, recently seen smearing Geert Wilders and congratulating his misguided government to keep him out of England, is furious over Canada’s refusing him entry. But what’s good for the goose is good for the gander: George Galloways own words “Freedom of speech is not an absolute and the dutch Mp Wilders is a racist hater of moslims, hater of Islam and he shouldn’t be allowed into our country”..so why shouldn’t the same apply to Galloway?

George Galloway, the pro-terrorist MP from the United Kingdom, has been denied entry to Canada on security grounds. I suspect it has to do with his track record of providing financial assistance to terrorist groups like Hamas, which is listed as a criminal organization in Canada. It would not surprise me if CSIS determined that Galloway’s visit would have had fundraising or recruiting spin-offs for Hamas or other terrorist groups. I’m sure Galloway himself would boast of those activities. (UPDATE: I am advised that, in fact, his planned speaking engagement at a Toronto church was to raise funds for Hamas.)

The cabinet minister in charge of immigration, Jason Kenney, could exercise his ministerial discretion and override his officials, but given Kenney’s zero-tolerance policy towards anti-Semitism, that’s a non-starter.

This case is an interesting intersection between free speech and national sovereignty and security.

Galloway is not a Canadian citizen; he does not have a right to come to Canada (nor any other rights guaranteed to our citizens). He would be a guest, and he is being turned away for security reasons.

Were he a citizen, he would have the right to spout his bigotry in Canada (but not to engage in material support for terrorists, which is a crime.) If he were a citizen, he would be allowed back home, and arrested for his crimes.

I don’t see this as a free speech issue; I see it as a sovereignty issue — keeping out an undesirable foreigner who has no right to be here, and who boasts about violating our criminal code.

The same goes for the pseudo-intellectual grandson of Hassan al Banna, the slick and cunning Tariq Ramadan, presented here in this howler from the MCB as “one of Europe’s leading Muslim thinkers” and as “Oxford University professor”- he has no right to enter the US. He is not a citizen and being the terrorist supporter and Islamic agit-prop he is, the Obama administration is doing the right thing to uphold the ban for keeping him out.

The New York Times reports today about the ongoing efforts to win Islamist scholar Tariq Ramadan entry into the United States. The State Department banned him from entering the country in 2004 after he was offered at a job at the University of Notre Dame. Since then, the Swiss national of Egyptian ancestry has become a cause célèbre for intellectuals eager to show they don’t support the war on Islamist terror. According to the Times, the American Civil Liberties Union appeal of his ban will be heard by the Federal Second Circuit next Tuesday.

The Times article treats the matter as just another example of the evil Bush administration’s trashing of civil liberties. The sole reason given for the ban according to the paper is that he gave $1,300 to a Swiss charity that served as a front for Hamas. But the truth about Ramadan is that he is a vicious Islamist whose work is dedicated to delegitimizing the United States and the State of Israel.

Tariq RamadanTariq Ramadan has been featured frequently in this space. He is one of the most dangerous Muslims in the West, because he is so suave and sophisticated and reasonable and “moderate”. So civilized, so calm, such a breath of fresh air compared to the frothing-at-the-mouth “kill the infidel apes and pigs” imams featured on the YouTube videos and in Fitna!

Yet, despite his reasonable manner, he is an agent of the Great Jihad and one of the more skilled practitioners of taqiyya in the West.
