Pakistan balks at pursuing anti-U.S. Muslim extremist groups

Surprised, anybody? “Different Priorities:”

Despite growing U.S. military losses in Afghanistan, Pakistan still refuses to target the extremist groups on its soil that are the biggest threat to the American-led mission there, the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan told McClatchy Newspapers.

Eight years after Washington and Islamabad agreed to fight the Taliban and al-Qaida, Pakistan has “different priorities” from the U.S., Anne Patterson said in a recent interview. Pakistan is “certainly reluctant to take action” against the leadership of the Afghan insurgency.

Pakistani Police Raid U.S. Contractor

Local Security Firm Hired to Protect Embassy in Islamabad Allegedly Had Dozens of Unlicensed Firearms

AP: Pakistani police raided a local security firm that helps protect the U.S. Embassy on Saturday, seizing dozens of allegedly unlicensed weapons at a time when unusually intense media scrutiny of America’s use of private contractors has deepened anti-U.S. sentiment here.

Two employees of the Inter-Risk company were arrested during the raids in Islamabad, police official Rana Akram told a news conference. Reporters were shown the disputed weapons – 61 assault rifles and nine pistols. Akram said police were seeking the firm’s owner.

In particular, Pakistani reporters, anti-U.S. bloggers and others have suggested the U.S. is using the American firm formerly known as Blackwater – a claim that chills many Pakistanis because of the company’s alleged involvement in killings of Iraqi civilians.

Al Qaradawi, the “reformer”, the voice of “moderation”: will he reform this?

In an amazing bit of irony, a Qatari government fund is creating the Al-Qaradawi Centre for Islamic Moderation and Renewal, named after leading Sunni scholar and self-proclaimed “Mufti of martyrdom operations” Yousef Al-Qaradawi. claims that the center will direct its “moderation” towards “politicians and economists,” train imams, and show the “huge difference between terrorism and jihad.”

Yet all of these stated goals directly contradict Al-Qaradawi’s statements in support of terrorism, his desire to overthrow capitalism, and his position as a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Director Hasan Khalifa is a professor of Comparative Religion at Cairo University and a great admirer of Al-Qaradawi. He stated that the organization “would direct its works at politicians and economists to help them promote moderation in their respective areas.”

In the realm of politics, there are numerous examples of Al-Qaradawi’s “moderation.” He has openly permitted the killing of American troops in Iraq and praised the “heroic deeds” from “Hamas, Jihad, Al-Aqsa Brigades, and others.” Reports by prominent London newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, repeated Israeli claims that Al-Qaradawi was funding “the heart of Hamas,” the Al-Islam Charity, through his Welfare Coalition. He has also pledged to fight the United States if it attacked Iran, stating:

“When America threatened it [Iran], I said I am against America. Iran has the right to possess peaceful nuclear power, and if America fights it, we would stand up against it [America].”

To top it all off, Al-Qaradawi has proclaimed himself the “Mufti of martyrdom operations” and stated:

“I have been affiliated with a group considered by Zionists as their first enemy; it is the Muslim Brotherhood that has provided and still provides martyrs for the cause of Palestine.

A Web site, called “Flying While Muslim,” has been launched to seek support for the six American imams (Islamic religious leaders) who say their rights were violated in 2006 when they were removed from a US Airways flight in Minnesota and arrested.

The “Flying While Muslim” site offers background information and updates about the six imams case and about racial and religious profiling of airline travelers. It also seeks donations to support the legal challenge to the airline. (shamelessly lifted from the Bunglawussi site)

A popular national chain of clothing stores is being sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for allegedly not hiring a Muslim Tulsa teenager because she wears a hijab, a religiously mandated head scarf.

The EEOC filed the lawsuit Wednesday against Abercrombie & Fitch in U.S. District Court in Tulsa, citing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, modified in 1991, as the basis for the action.

The suit says that Samantha Elauf, 17, applied in June 2008 for a sales job at the Abercrombie Kids store in Woodland Hills Mall. A district manager allegedly told her that the hijab, which Elauf wears in observance of her religious beliefs, did not fit the store’s image.

“Defendant refused to hire Ms. Elauf because she wears a hijab, claiming that the wearing of headgear was prohibited by its Look Policy, and, further, failed to accommodate her religious beliefs by making an exception to the Look Policy,” the lawsuit states.

Elauf went to the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Oklahoma, which helped her file a complaint with the EEOC in Oklahoma City.

One of the more controversial moments of Operation Cast Lead happened in the opening days of the conflict, when Israel bombed a police graduation ceremony.
