They were of Afghan, Pakistani, Somali and Turkish origin and six were Danish citizens, police said.

Denmark’s contribution to the US-led military campaign in Iraq has prompted fears that terrorists may target it.

The country also drew anger from Muslims worldwide after a Danish newspaper last year printed cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

‘Unstable explosive’

Police said they raided 11 addresses overnight on Monday in and around Copenhagen.

Buildings in the city’s southern suburb of Ishoej and its Noerrebro district – both with large immigrant populations – were among those cordoned off by police.

Three Muslims have been indicted in Norway in connection with attacks on a synagogue and a plot to attack the US and Israeli embassies.

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Three men have been indicted on charges connected with an attack on an Oslo synagogue or plotting to attack the U.S. or Israeli embassies in the Norwegian capital, the national prosecutor said Tuesday.

All charges related to the cases were dropped against a fourth man, said prosecutor Kristine Rise. He had been identified in earlier court rulings as 29-year-old Mohammed Adnan Nabi.

The others have also denied any wrongdoing, and their attorneys said the basis for the indictments was weak.

Arfan Bhatti, 30, was indicted on charges of firing gunshots at Norway’s main synagogue in September 2006, for conspiring to commit a terror attack on the embassies and on other unrelated charges.

Andreas Bog Kristiansen, 27, was indicted with Bhatti on charges of plotting to use explosives or weapons to attack the U.S. or Israeli embassies, and conspiring to commit armed robbery. Ibrahim Oezbabacan, 29, was indicted, with Bhatti, for either firing or being an accomplice to 13 shots being fired at the Oslo synagogue.

A Swedish Muslim group on Tuesday said it plans to sue a local newspaper for publishing a drawing of the Prophet Muhammad with a dog’s body. The Nerikes Allehanda newspaper in Orebro printed the cartoon made by artist Lars Vilks in an August 19 editorial that criticized Swedish art galleries for not displaying Vilks’ art.
Mahmoud Aldebe, chairman of the Swedish Muslim Federation, said the group would sue the newspaper for inciting hatred against ethnic groups. “It ridicules our religion. This is discriminating and insulting… they want to see just how far they are able to go by pushing the boundaries of press freedom,” he said.

All together now: Which ethnic group is Islam again? And for that matter, the paper has not at all overstepped the boundaries of Western freedom of the press — boundaries which should not be moved to give Islam any special status.

The religious needs of Muslim university students were addressed at an inaugural conference launched by the University of Western Sydney.

UWS Director of Equity and Diversity Dr Sev Ozdowski said they wanted to develop national standards for Muslim students which could be incorporated by other universities.

The “Access, Inclusion and Success – Muslim students at Australian universities” two-day conference is covering issues relating to gender, discrimination and how to meet the fundamental religious needs of Muslim students.

Dr Ozdowski told The Daily Telegraph the aim of the forum was to raise awareness and to find a way to make sure Muslim students can meet obligations to their religion as well as the university.

UWS already has prayer rooms and halal food at a majority of its campuses for its 2000 Muslim students – the largest tertiary Muslim student population in Australia.

“There is no model or national standard to guide Australia’s universities on how they can best address the varied cultural, ethnic and religious needs of their diverse student populations,” Dr Ozdowski said.

“It’s important that all people, including those from Muslim backgrounds, have the ability to fully participate in higher education so they can gain good employment and strengthen their place in society.

“We also need to address the practical realities that Muslim students face every day, such as providing prayer space and cafeteria food that is halal, to ensure university campuses are welcoming of all cultures and faiths,” he said.

About 150 people are involved in the conference including representatives and speakers from universities and TAFE, the government and local muslim communities.

Muslim student Najwa Hussein – who is completing her post graduate diploma in psychology at UWS – believes the conference is a positive step forward for Muslim students.

“It is part of our obligations to fulfil these religious duties, to pray and to ensure we eat halal meat,” the 21-year-old from Guildford said.

“These small things are part of our daily life so if the universities adopt such facilities, that would be awesome,” she said.

The conference, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Parramatta, concludes today with practical workshops.

UNIVERSITIES have been urged to abandon their long-held commitment to secularism and incorporate a better understanding of religions in their teaching programs.

Gary Bouma, a professor of sociology at Monash University, told a Muslim students’ conference that the secularist stance of universities was no longer appropriate at a time when religion played a more important role in public life. He said secularism was not a neutral stance but was itself an ideology that was inimical to religions.

“Religious diversity is on the increase and religion is back in the public space,” he said. “Secularists have a right to have a voice in universities but not a voice to denigrate or relegate religions to a non-space.”

POWERFUL bombs ripped through a bus and a market in the Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi today, killing at least 20 people including 15 government defence workers.

The devastating attacks happened minutes apart in sensitive military areas of the city, which is near the capital Islamabad and also the site of key US ally President Pervez Musharraf’s official army residence.

The first explosion hit a bus carrying defence workers to work in the city’s Qasim bazaar, police officer Mohammad Hamid said.

Fifteen of the employees were killed and about a dozen wounded, interior ministry officials said.

The 40-seater bus was almost destroyed by the blast, which could be heard across the city.

Rescue workers were cutting open the wreckage to pull out injured people and dead bodies.

“There was a huge bang then I saw the bus in a mangled heap. Body parts were scattered across the road and there was blood everywhere,” witness Mohammad Tahir said.

The second blast happened about 3km away when a suspected motorcycle bomb exploded in the city’s RA bazaar, security officials said.

Five people were killed but it was not known if they were civilians or otherwise, they said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either bombing.

But a series of deadly attacks have rocked Pakistan since the military’s storming of the hardline Red Mosque in Islamabad in July. More than 100 people were killed in the siege and storming of the pro-Taliban mosque.

Military officials say 60 soldiers and 250 militants have been killed in violence in about six weeks.
A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-filled car into a paramilitary vehicle in the Pakistani tribal region of Bajaur on Saturday, killing three soldiers and two civilians, officials said.

The situation is also tense after the breakdown of a controversial peace deal between the government and Islamic pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan’s troubled tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.

The army is still trying to secure the safety of more than 150 soldiers whom militants say they abducted late last week in the tribal area of South Waziristan.

The military insists the troops were “trapped” amid a dispute between the rebels and local tribesmen, but the insurgents say they will not be freed until Pakistan pulls all soldiers from the area.

Pakistan sent troops into the tribal zone to track down al-Qaeda and Taliban rebels who fled the fall of the hardline Taliban regime after the US-led military response to the September 11, 2001 attacks.

General Musharraf, who is also fighting for his political life at home, has come under mounting pressure from Washington to crack down on Islamic extremism in the area.

US officials have said that Osama Bin Laden’s al-Qaeda network has regrouped in Pakistan’s tribal belt to plot attacks on international targets.

COPENHAGEN (AFP) – Danish police said Tuesday they had prevented a terrorist attack with the arrest overnight of eight men believed to be linked to Al-Qaeda and suspected of possessing bomb materials.

The director general of the Danish intelligence service PET, Jakob Scharf, said the arrests near Copenhagen had “prevented a terrorist attack.”

“We would describe the main suspects as militant Islamists with international contacts, including leading members of Al-Qaeda,” Scharf told a press conference.

Scharf would not disclose any information about the possible target of the planned attack, but said there was “no direct link” to Denmark’s military involvement in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Police raided 11 homes in the early hours of Tuesday.

German-born not “German born” Turk Murat Kurnaz has long claimed that he was beaten by German special forces troops in Afghanistan after being arrested as a terror suspect by the US. New testimony may prove him right.

The tent flaps were fluttering in Kandahar’s icy wind, the temperature was below freezing and the prisoners, wrapped in thin blankets, were exposed to the Afghan winter. It was a few weeks after the beginning of the American military campaign in Afghanistan. By January 2002, the Taliban appeared to have been defeated, and the US Army had set up a temporary camp in southern Afghanistan where prisoners were to be held.
According to Major Matthew W. Donald, whose 108th Military Police Company had been stationed in Kandahar since early January 2002, the hygienic conditions were at first abominable. There was rarely any hot water, and both prisoners and soldiers were forced to use make-shift latrines. The prisoners were ordered to carry the fecal matter in buckets from the latrines to oil barrels. “The fecal matter was picked up with a truck,” says Donald. “The drivers drove through the main gate to the pickup point on the prison grounds.” There, says Donald, the barrels were loaded onto the trucks, driven to a point outside the camp and incinerated. Soldiers call the procedure, not uncommon in war zones, “shit burning.”

May Have Committed a Crime

Standard war zone memories, perhaps. But the recollections of Major Donald, who now teaches military history at the University of Ohio, could soon play a central role in one of the most sensitive cases in the German judicial system. Since last fall, the prosecutor’s office in the southern German town of Tübingen has been attempting to determine whether elite fighters with the Special Forces Command (KSK) mistreated Murat Kurnaz, a prisoner in Kandahar at the time, before he was flown to the US detention center at Guantanamo Bay. In case that wasn’t warning enough, here’s another: the pictures are very disturbing.

One of the least known and least publicized current wars involving Islamic extremists is the ongoing jihad in southern Thailand. Muslim separatists in the southernmost portion of the country have been committing a seemingly unending series of terror attacks on Thai Buddhists, on other Muslims (apparently as punishment for not supporting the violence) and on the Thai police and military. This has been going on at least since 2004, and most likely much longer (though unseen by the outside world). The goal of the terrorists is to create a Muslim-controlled independent state ruled by Islamic law.

The few reports of the Thai jihad that reach the western press are almost invariably purely textual descriptions of the violence; only rarely are photos to be found in media reports, and almost all of those photos do not show what’s really going on: beheadings, corpse desecrations, torture, bombings, and more.

Thai police & military secure a body of one of their own 

An anonymous correspondent (based in Malaysia) recently sent to zombietime a series of extremely explicit photographs depicting some of violence being committed by Islamic terrorists in southern Thailand. Extensive online searches through various news archives failed to turn up the precise origins of these photos, nor of any photos even vaguely similar. Because of this, the images are newsworthy, and I decided to make these photographs available online as a sort of “evidence archive” of what has been happening in southern Thailand recently.

You will find the photographs below (along with captions). Some of the pictures have timestamps from 2006 on them, but the others are from unknown dates.

In this way the Muslims will gain the upper hand and the enemies will be humiliated; then when we have killed and wounded many of them and gained the upper hand over them, we may take prisoners and bind a bond firmly on them [cf. ANYANG, South Korea, Sept. 2 (Yonhap) –– A pastor at the South Korean church whose volunteers were held hostage for six weeks by Afghanistan’s Taliban said some of the captives were “severely beaten” by the insurgents when they refused to convert to Islam.

The 19 former hostages, freed in stages last week under a deal between the South Korean government and the Taliban, arrived on a flight from Dubai on Sunday morning. Earlier, the Islamic militants had killed two male hostages but freed two females.

Melbourne official with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship has been charged with receiving a bribe.
Ijaz Ahmad Aziz, 44, of Clayton, was arrested yesterday and appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
He is accused of accepting $8,000 to help a person obtain a visa in May. (sic)
Commonwealth Prosecutor Krista Breckweg told the court bail was not opposed, providing Mr. Aziz meets certain bail conditions, including that he report to police and not leave Victoria.
Magistrate Peter Reardon ordered Mr. Aziz to return to court in November for a committal mention hearing.

This Department has become a serious liability in our war against terror. A culture that was identified in a Government Report as toxic continues to thwart sane policing of our borders and migration intake. Deck chairs were shuffled after the Palmer Report, but the “culture” remains entrenched. A culture of obdurate and deliberate thwarting of Government policy at every turn.

This website has been pursuing another Department of Immigration and Citizenship officer, a Mr. Abul Rizvi, for more than 8 months but the “toxic culture” has closed ranks around him. Rizvi was the officer in charge of a visa application by one Zulfikar Sharif. Sharif was a Singaporean national who engaged in Islamist activities including running a website that the Singapore Government declared a terrorist fund raising portal. Sharif was on the run from Singapore authorities and applied for a protection visa under one of the insane categories we afford terrorists, mass murderers and crimes against humanity offenders (see Link 4).
Questions regarding Rizvi’s use of discretionary powers and his interventions on behalf of Sharif have gone unanswered for months.

Rizvi was “transferred” internally, at first, when scrutiny fell on his role, and he has since left the Department of Immigration and Citizenship for another role in Public Service.

Given the Islam-inspired state of terrorism-inspired security procedures we now endure, the very least the Australian people should expect is that Muslims not be in positions where Australian sovereignty can be breached with the stroke of a pen.

The Swedish newspaper that published artist Lars Vilks’ sketches of Mohammed is refusing to apologize to the world’s 39.7 gazillion seething Muslims.

From MPACUK: A year on from the Danish Cartoon row another Nordic newspaper has published cartoons insulting the Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him. This time the culprit is Sweden’s Nerikes Allehanda newspaper which has published a cartoon depicting the face of the Prophet on the body of a dog!

This is a disturbing development as it comes just 1 year after the Danish cartoon row and signals a rising trend in Islamophobia on the Continent.

Printing content like this achieves nothing positive, instead it results in the further isolation of Muslims and plays into the hands of extremists who will use this is as propaganda and poison impressionable young minds.

Freedom of expression must go hand in hand with the duty to act responsibly. What about the right of people to live in peace with their neighbours, is this not a democratic right that we must also protect and uphold?

By publishing this cartoon both the artist and newspaper have shown recklessness as their actions will create further mistrust, suspicion and hatred between communities. Do we allow such “expressions of freedom” even if they incite hatred?

We urge you to take action but in a non-violent and peaceful way and register your protest with the Swedish Embassy in London.
