David Miliband’s speech on Afghanistan at NATO headquarters yesterday sent completely the wrong message to our enemies. The foreign secretary called for a political deal with so-called moderate elements of the Taliban in an effort to split the insurgency:

“First, a political strategy for dealing with the insurgency through reintegration and reconciliation. That means in the long term an inclusive political settlement in Afghanistan, which draws away conservative Pashtun nationalists – separating those who want Islamic rule locally from those committed to violent jihad globally – and gives them a sufficient role in local politics that they leave the path of confrontation with their government.”

In effect Miliband is saying that Britain and the United States must be willing to place cooperative, supposedly more reasonable wings of the Taliban back in local power in Afghanistan. This would be like putting the Nazis back in office after the fall of Berlin or the Khmer Rouge in charge of Cambodia again. No matter how much spin is placed on this negotiating strategy, it smacks of defeatism and appeasement, and a failure to place the conflict in Afghanistan within the broader context of a global war against a brutal Islamist ideology that seeks the destruction of the West and the free world.

Miliband, ecstatic: There is a group of Arab leaders who now view a regional approach as key to progress in the Middle East and see the ‘rush’ of moves for peace as far better than the status quo of stand-off and separation. This energy needs to find release, and that is the significance of the American drive to establish a freeze on settlements as a trigger to direct negotiations.

It is easier and far more convenient to smear everyone who criticizes them as “right wing extremists, Fascists, Nazis or Islamophobes”.  And the useful idiots from the media sing along and blame Israel instead.  A dissonant, ugly tune indeed…

Last week in Washington, D.C., more pressure was exerted on Turkey to recognize the widespread depredation and pillage of religious sites and objects in the northern third of Cyprus. This third, otherwise known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus–an illegal, unilaterally declared state recognized by Ankara only–is the land Turkey seized in 1974 and still holds under military occupation.

On Tuesday, July 21–one day after the 35-year anniversary of Turkey’s first invasion on the island in 1974–the U.S. Helsinki Commission released a report for Congress. This 50-page report is entitled “Destruction of Cultural Property in the Northern Part of Cyprus and Violations of International Law” and is presently available online at csce.gov.

The report roundly acknowledges what the government of Cyprus and the Autocephalous Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, along with many scholars and journalists, have already observed: that “a plethora of archaeological and religious sites have been damaged” and that they are still “in peril.”

The report notes that “500 Greek Orthodox churches and chapels have been pillaged, vandalized, or demolished; 133 churches, chapels, and monasteries have been desecrated; the whereabouts of 15,000 paintings are unknown; 77 churches have been converted into mosques, 28 are being used by the Turkish military forces as hospitals or camps; and 13 are used as agricultural barns.”

Concluding remarks in the report find that “under conventional and customary law, Turkey, as an occupying power, bears responsibility for acts against cultural property.” International humanitarian law pertaining to the protection of religious sites and objects is referenced throughout the report. Under the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), for instance, and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), destruction of cultural property is considered a war crime.

The Commission’s report is notable not for presenting new information, but for being an additional witness, in another forum and before another audience, to the myriad acts of destruction and theft which have occurred, and continue to occur, in the northern third of Cyprus–and under the constant eye of the Turkish military, a force that is 43,000 soldiers strong on the island. Several of the ruined churches were, or still are, within Turkish military camps; their destruction could not have happened without the military’s help and/or compliance. >>>

Actualne/Brno – Two high-ranking officials of the Christian Democrats (KDU-ÄŒSL) on Monday rejected plans by the Muslim community in Brno to build a second mosque in the city, citing fears of Islamic radicalism and cultural tensions. The statements came only months before October’s general elections.

“Tolerance is one thing, but naivety is something quite different,” said David Macek, KDU-ÄŒSL deputy chairman. He said many western European countries had been tolerant to Muslim immigrants and now had to face clashes between them and the majority society. “We should not repeat the same mistakes that other European states made in relation to Muslims.”

Stanislav Juránek, the party’s leading candidate for South Moravia and the region’s former governor, voiced concerns that local traditions might be “pushed out by a foreign culture and religion”. He went on to say that, “There are no churches in Yemen or Saudi Arabia. Their construction is completely impossible.”

The two officials added that construction of new mosques should not be allowed anywhere in the Czech Republic.

Muslim groups mum on Hindu request that they declare India off-limits for jihad

Well, Pakistan’s headbanger in chief also scoffed at a request to renounce jihad against India: Paki PM Zardari: “You Can’t Tell Us to Give Up Jihad Terrorism, That’s Our Religion..”

This should have been easy: a Hindu group asked 13 Muslim organizations to declare India a “friend” of Islam and thus off-limits for jihad. One would think that these official representatives of the vaunted Religion of Peace would have welcomed this opportunity to repudiate the jihadists who are supposedly twisting the peaceful teachings of Islam and hijacking the faith, and to affirm their acceptance of the proposition that Muslims and non-Muslims must live together as equals in a society that does not establish either religion.

But that was five months ago, and so far, according to Jihad Watch reader Varunappa, the Muslim groups have said…nothing at all.

Now, why is that?

Hundreds of thousands of immigrants come to Britain just to get welfare benefits, a senior judge declared yesterday.

Judge Ian Trigger said the cost of the handouts has helped to double the national debt.

He spoke out as he gave a two-year jail sentence to a Jamaican drug minder who disappeared from the notice of immigration authorities after claiming asylum.

He told Lucien McClearley, 31, at Liverpool Crown Court: ‘Your case illustrates all too clearly the completely lax immigration policy that exists and has existed over recent years.’

Sentencing McClearley, he added: ‘People like you, and there are literally hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people like you, come to these shores to avail themselves of the generous welfare benefits that exist here.

‘In the past ten years the national debt of this country has risen to extraordinary heights, largely because central Government has wasted billions of pounds. Much of that has been wasted on welfare payments.

‘For every £1 that the decent citizen, who is hard-working, pays in taxes, nearly 10 per cent goes on servicing that national debt. That is twice the amount it was in 1997 when this Government came to power.’ 

McClearley arrived legally in Britain in November 2001 on a visitor’s visa.

He was arrested in October 2002 after it ran out but claimed asylum and was released while this was being processed.

He then ‘disappeared from the radar of the authorities’, the court heard. His application was rejected in 2004 but he was only arrested this February after police stopped a car he was driving and noticed it smelled of cannabis.

A search of the house where McClearley was staying in Everton uncovered cannabis worth £7,200, a gram of cocaine and a fake passport.

Mr Trigger also said hundreds of thousands of immigrants came to this country to ‘avail themselves of the generous welfare benefits that exist here’

He admitted taking a vehicle without consent, possessing cannabis and cocaine, possessing a class-B drug with intent and two counts of possessing false identity documents.

Judge Trigger, who is also a part-time immigration judge, told McClearley: ‘The fact that it took nearly two years to process your claim shows how desperate the situation in this country has become.’

The 65-year-old judge said he ‘hoped and trusted’ McClearley would be deported immediately on release.

ISTANBUL, July 28 (Compass Direct News) – On a crowded street here last week a German businessman died after a Turk with a history of mental problems stabbed him for being a Christian. Witnesses saw Ibrahim Akyol, 26, stab Gregor Kerkeling in the chest on July 20 at 10:50 a.m. after following him out of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Istanbul’s central district of Beyoglu. Church security cameras captured the attack on Kerkeling, who regularly visited the church when he was in town for business. Akyol, a Muslim who reportedly had been visiting area churches scouting around for a Christian victim, followed Kerkeling out of the church building and asked him for a Turkish lira. When Kerkeling refused and gestured him away, Akyol repeatedly stabbed him in the heart and chest area before passersby intervened. In a statement to the prosecutor, Akyol reportedly confessed that in the morning he woke up and decided that on that day he would kill a Christian. “I wanted to kill a Christian that day and was visiting churches for this reason,” he told prosecutors, according to the Hurriet Daily News. “I saw the person and killed him.”

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish nation-state, or as the rightful homeland of the Jewish People, is a necessary condition of any future Israeli-Palestinian peace treaty – according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Arab and Islamic leaders have rejected this demand. The reason for Arab inability and unwillingness to consider Netanyahu’s demand is the fact that the Islamic world is ideologically incapable of according legitimacy to the State of Israel, for deep-seated religious, nationalistic and historical reasons.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has set out five conditions for the conclusion of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal involving establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. The first, and the hardest for the Arab world to accept, is Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish nation-state, or as the rightful homeland of the Jewish People. In fact, it is close to impossible, because Islam is intrinsically incapable of according legitimacy to the State of Israel for the embedded ideological reasons detailed below.

We all know that honor killings are common in all cultures and have nothing to do with Islam… right?

Not. Honor Killings are not simply “Domestic Violence” either, but indeed very Islamic. Gaza Muslim bludgeons his daughter to death with an iron chain because she owned a cell phone

Yet another honor killing — the 9th in Gaza since the beginning of 2009. “Rights groups: Gaza man suspected of killing daughter for owning cellphone,” from the Jerusalem Post, July 29 (thanks to JW):

A Gaza man is being held on suspicion he bludgeoned his daughter to death with an iron chain because he discovered she owned a cell phone, human rights groups said Wednesday.The groups added that the victim’s three brother’s were also detained.

The woman, a 27-year-old divorced mother of five, was the 10th victim of a so-called “honor killing” in the Palestinian territories and among Arabs in Israel this year.

Spain: Muslim stabs his daughter 20 times in attempted honor killing

A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right.” However, “not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (‘Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2).

In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law. In accord with this, in 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that “Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values.”

Why does it matter that the practice of honor killing has Islamic sanction? Because if the roots of honor killing are never discussed and always ignored, the practice will never stop. Until the Islamic roots of the practice are discussed openly and human rights groups begin calling for reform, honor killings will continue in the Islamic world — and in Muslim communities in the West.
