The last truly free platform for free speech is the internet. Some of us got here earlier than others but most wi-fi-diehards landed and planted themselves on the net because in the informational battle space there was no leftwing censorship wall that you find in big media, newspapers, television etc. You shut us down, and we are done. Comedy Central submits to Islamic intimidation — now South Park cannot even say the word “Muhammad”

An episode of “South Park” that continued a story line involving the Prophet Muhammad was shown Wednesday night on Comedy Central with audio bleeps and image blocks reading “CENSORED” after a Muslim group warned the show’s creators that they could face violence for depicting that holy Islamic prophet.

Except that they didn’t. Holy Mo the Unseeable, paws be upon him, was safely hidden inside a bear suit:


So now you get threatened if you don’t show images of Muhammad. These pesky Presbies keep changing the rules! The solution is bleeps….

Courage is a commodity sorely lacking by Comedy Central. They certainly didn’t care if they offended Jews or Christians. Their lack of backbone is what’s offensive.

But hey, why would the progressives from Comedy Central wanna be heroes when even Fox’s blowhard in chief (Bill O’Reilly) openly claims  “The risk [of free speech] is higher than the reward???”

This is why Islamic supremacists issue threats and practice intimidation in the first place: because it works. Tom Gross reports that JPost ‘Palestinian’ reporter Khaled Abu Toameh, who is a Muslim, has had a speaking engagement canceled at Tufts University just outside of Boston for fear that it would be ‘misunderstood‘ by Muslims.

Moderate Palestinian journalist Khaled Abu Toameh, who is a subscriber to this email list, writes on his Facebook page:

“Tufts Friends of Israel, the pro-Israel group on campus, has decided to cancel a lecture by Khaled Abu Toameh, scheduled for next week, in fear that I will be seen as anti-Islam by the Arab students and would make Tufts Friends of Israel look bad.”

This follows the recent decision by the Israel Society at Cambridge University in Britain to cancel a talk by Benny Morris (see a previous dispatch on this list for details.)

Victoria sets loose its discrimination witchhunters

Victoria’s equal opportunity police were just not getting enough complaints to work with. So this foolish Labor Government this week unleashed them to go invent some more, passing even more oppressive Equal Opportunity laws:

Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls welcomed the passage of the new reforms, saying they ensured Victorians benefited from equal opportunity laws fit for the 21st century…

He said the new laws would help stamp out entrenched and systemic discrimination against minority groups by giving the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission the ability to investigate persistent and systemic discrimination without first requiring a complaint to be made.

Let me show you what kind of divisive thing you may now get, using as an example a case from the commission’s own files:

(The Equal Opportunity Commission) hired May Helou, head of the Islamic Council of Victoria’s women’s support group. Her job, the EOC said, was to ensure “Arabic and Muslim communities are aware of their rights under anti-discrimination laws” and give “support to people wishing to make a complaint”.

The hounds had been set loose… In March 2002, Helou told Muslim converts at the ICV headquarters of a seminar on jihad to be run by Catch the Fire and asked them to go.

Said one later, she didn’t want the meeting to be held “without any Muslims present”. So when (pastors) Nalliah and Scot got up to speak at their seminar about jihad, they had in front of them 250 born-again Christians – and three people they did not know were Muslims.

The CHRC doesn’t know Canadian law and doesn’t give a damn

The other day, the National Post’s John Ivison wrote about the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s appalling view, as expressed under oath by “hate speech” investigator Dean Steacy, that “freedom of speech is an American concept, so I don’t give it any value”.

Seriously, Steacy said that — look it up for yourself in the transcript of the hearing,here, at page 4793.

Ivison asked the CHRC to explain themselves, and they told him:

(a commission spokesperson said this quote has been taken out of context and that if the question had been about freedom of expression, one of the freedoms guaranteed in the Charter, the answer would have been different).

That’s a lie, of course. Here’s my letter to the editor in today’s Post pointing out that lie:

CHRC ‘bullies’ don’t believe in free speech

Re: Laws Can’t Assure We’ll Never Be Offended, John Ivison, April 3.

John Ivison is right to focus on the stunning testimony of the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s “hate speech” investigator, Dean Steacy, who declared that “freedom of speech is an American concept, so I don’t give it any value.“

What’s even more amazing is that when Mr. Ivison asked the CHRC about thisshocking statement, the commission actually tried to defend it.

First the CHRC’s spin doctors told Mr. Ivison that the quote was taken out of context. But it wasn’t — it was a one-sentence answer to a one-sentence question: “What value do you give freedom of speech when you investigate one of these complaints?“

Then the CHRC tried to argue that our Charter of Rights only protects “freedom of expression,” so it’s OK that its censors don’t give any value to “freedom of speech” because that’s “different.” But that’s just stupid: speech is a kind of expression, the most common kind.

Despite what the CHRC says, freedom of speech is guaranteed under Canadian law: the 1960 Bill of Rights brought in by John Diefenbaker lists “freedom of speech” right in section 1. And the phrase “freedom of speech” has been used in no less than243 rulings by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Canada’s censorship laws are being enforced by bullies who don’t give a damn about our freedoms and don’t even know the law.

That’s how it works: you set up a commission to deal with crimes of thought and stack it with lefties. You hand them the power to go after anyone for any reason. As a “safeguard”, you require the commission to prosecute its case through the courts. You then stack the courts with the same left-wing activists you appointed to the commission.

Plenty of precedent in the Soviet Union, North Korea, Kampuchea, Saddam’s Iraq, China, Myanmar, East Germany, Romania, Cuba …
