Jihadists are radicalizing Muslims in prisons outside the U.S., in Europe and elsewhere, through aggressive indoctrination and recruitment. A new RAND Corporation report, “Radicalization or Rehabilitation: Understanding the Challenge of Extremist and Radicalized Prisoners,” cites prisons as a key venue for Islamist recruitment.
Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, a former inmate and mentor of the late al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia commander Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, describes jihadist tactics in prisons in the radical periodical Nida ul-Islam to include:

* Refusal to cooperate in the prison’s administrative regime, intimidating prison staff, and attacking guards.

* Using prison visits to communicate with followers in the outside world.

* Holding alternative Friday prayers to draw other prisoners away from the official prison services.

* Producing and distributing ideological literature within, and for dissemination beyond, the prison population.

The RAND report also notes that much of the literature on Islam in prison libraries is specifically Islamist. Fundamentalist authors like the 13th-century figure Ibn Taymiyya and the 20th-century writer Sayyid Qutb are prevalent and seem especially attractive to prison readers since these men spent time in jail themselves, making them sympathetic figures to these captive audiences in Europe’s prisons.

Governments are trying to counter the spread of Islamism in prisons. The RAND report assesses three programs in Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. The religious rehabilitation group (RRG) in Singapore attempts to rehab arrested members of Jemaah Islamiya with counter-Islamist material produced by Islamic scholars and other experts. Moreover, relatives of inmates receive financial assistance and are counseled, while their children are provided with special education.

According to DEBKAfile‘s Iranian sources, US journalist Roxana Saberi was released Tuesday, May 12, as part of an exchange deal under which Washington agreed to free four senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards intelligence officers captured in Irbil, northern Iraq in January 2007. Defined as “diplomats” by Tehran, they ran terror operations and covert arms supplies from Iran then to al Qaeda and Sunni insurgent networks.

AUSSIE Diggers being deployed to Afghanistan are being warned by the Defence Department topay for extra life insurance because existing compensation has been deemed “inadequate”.

A day after 600 troops from Townsville left for the warzone, The Courier-Mail can reveal hundreds of soldiers have been issued with letters from the department advising of the need for “appropriate insurance”.

“The additional accident insurance cost for basic cover is less than a night out on the town for a few beers with your mates each month,” the letter reads.

If it’s that cheap, why does the Government pay it? It has billions for pink batts, so why not a few millions for soldiers risking death in the line of duty?

The Sun-Herald‘s Conrad Walters on Joe Rosenthal’s celebrated photograph of the landing at Iwo Jima: 

The original photo, which was later revealed as having been staged, inspired a memorial statue in Washington and was central to the 2006 Clint Eastwood films Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.

Rosenthal, who died three years ago, spent more than half a century defending that image. It wasn’t staged, as this 1995 Associated Press piece tried to make clear: 

The man responsible for spreading the story that the picture was staged, the late Time-Life correspondent Robert Sherrod, long ago admitted he was wrong. But still the rumor persists.

In 1991, a New York Times book reviewer, misquoting a murky treatise on the flag-raising called “Iwo Jima: Monuments, Memories and the American Hero,” went so far as to suggest that the Pulitzer Prize committee consider revoking Rosenthal’s 1945 award for photography.

And just a year ago [in 1994], columnist Jack Anderson promised readers “the real story” of the Iwo Jima photo: that Rosenthal had “accompanied a handpicked group of men for a staged flag raising hours after the original event.”

Anderson later retracted his story. But the damage, once again, had been done. 

Evidently.

 Offensive videos posted on YouTube by Perth man Brendon O’Connell send shockwaves through local Jewish community. ‘People said they didn’t know such things still existed, certainly not in Australia,’ Jewish Agency emissary relates

* This is a case of  assault, stalking, verbally battering  and savaging two young Jews, who just happened to be in a supermarket minding their own business. The fact that O’Donnell actually punched one of them in the face (which was not shown on the video) makes it a first degree hate crime. Therefore its not  a free speech issue and we don’t need racial vilification laws to deal with this.

The video of the actual confrontation was taken down by YouTube for it’s antisemitic tirade.

VIDEO – Anti-Semitic videos posted by an Australian man, Brendon O’Connell from Perth, on YouTube have sent shockwaves through the Jewish community in the city.

O’Connell, 39, was arrested Thursday and is set to appear before a court next week and be charged with conduct likely to incite animosity or racist harassment. If convicted, he faces a possible maximum penalty of 14 years in prison plus a fine of $18,000.

ISTANBUL (A.A) – via ZIP – Islam is against all kinds of violence, and Islamophobia is the biggest obstacle for global peace, head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate said at the closing meeting of the 7th meeting of Eurasia Islamic Council.

“As a universal message, Islam is against all kinds of violence, extremism, pressures and intolerance. We announce that we are standing against violence and terrorism no matter who the perpetrators are and which religion they believe in,” Ali Bardakoglu told the council meeting that gathered representatives from 42 countries in Istanbul.

“And we are hopeful,” Bardakoglu said. “Because Eurasia has a big heritage of religious sciences.”

Bardakoglu said the Eurasian geography –from Istanbul to Sarajevo, Samarkand and Tashkent– was home to several important scholars in history.

“We must be aware of our rich heritage,” he said, adding that the Islamic world should overcome prejudices.

Bardakoglu also said Eurasian countries should work together to teach Islam and form a common calender for religious days.

KOTA: Taliban fighters are shaving off their beards and trying to flee from a Pakistani army offensive in their Swat bastion, the military said on Friday.Clashes had erupted in various parts of the region, the military said on Friday, adding it was achieving successes. It also appealed to civilians to identify Taliban fighters trying to flee.

“We have confirmed reports that these Taliban terrorists, after shaving off their beards and cutting their hair, are fleeing from the area,” the military said. “We request the people of Swat to identify them,” it said, while providing a telephone number for informants to call or send text messages….

Bad news next:

Al-Qaeda diversifying its alliances with Pakistani jihadist groups

“‘During recent fighting in Bajaur, senior Pakistani officers repeatedly insisted that the local villagers had been led astray by shadowy international militants,’ the correspondent said…”

Funny how these alleged misunderstanders of Islam keep finding each other and uniting under a shared set of goals. Despite the claims below that the conflicts inside Pakistan are “essentially local,” the common thread among these groups and acts of jihadist violence from London to Algeria to the Philippines is the imperative to subjugate the entire world under Islamic law. If they were into bumper stickers, they might read: “Think jihad globally, wage jihad locally.”

The West is Naïve, Greedy, and Cowardly When it Comes to Appeasing Islamists

Some Westerners, especially politicians, act in good faith toward Islamists and Muslim terrorists. Guantanamo will be closed, and its inmates will be rehabilitated in the U.S. and some European countries – although everybody knows that these men were not accidentally roaming Afghanistan as tourists, but were criminals fighting along side their Taliban comrades when they were arrested.
 
Alongside Hamid Karzei, the Afghan president, and Pakistan’s president, Asif Ali Zardari, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during a press conference on May 6, 2009, that she “deeply regretted” the death of civilians in a recent clash with Taliban terrorists, and promised a thorough investigation.
But Clinton should by now know that terrorists, whether they are Taliban or Hamas do not value human life. They use civilians as human shields when they fight the “infidels.” This has become a pattern in Afghanistan and Gaza. Besides, as these terrorists do not wear a uniform, it is difficult to tell whether they are civilians or terrorists.

Here again we see the same phenomenon playing out that we have seen many, many times over the last few years: a Muslim demands that a workplace change its practices to allow for Islamic observance, rather than dealing with the parameters of the job as it is. Every one of these incidents is a test case in the question of which will prevail: Islamic law or Western practice and custom. Will Muslims be established as a privileged class in Western countries, with rights that others don’t have, or will equality of rights and equality of treatment be maintained?

Rather, the report attributes such punishments to the lack of the rule of law, ignoring the fact that amputation for theft is a mainstay of Islamic law. This underscores the obvious but crucial point that one man’s “rule of law” is not necessarily equivalent to another’s. A great deal depends on whose law, and whose idea of “justice” is being enforced. And political correctness aside, they are not all basically the same.
