Israel’s hardline Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has told Israeli ambassadors to stop “grovelling” and defend their national honour.

He told a shocked audience of some 150 envoys in Jerusalem to “stop turning the other cheek” whenever Israel was insulted, Israeli media report.

The envoys were reportedly given no right of reply at the conference.

“We received a monologue without being able to hold a discussion,” one unnamed ambassador told Haaretz newspaper.

Israel’s top diplomat, who worked as a nightclub bouncer in his youth in the USSR, is known for his abrasive style. He famously once said that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could “go to hell”.

“I have seen that some ambassadors identify themselves with the other side to such an extent that they are all the time trying to justify and explain,” he told the ambassadors meeting at the foreign ministry, according to several reports of the event.

“Terms like ‘national honour’ have value in the Middle East,” he was reported to have said.

“There must not be an attitude of obsequiousness and self-deprecation, and the need to always justify the other side. This is the wrong approach.

“We will not turn the other cheek. There will be a response to everything,” the reports quoted him as saying.

In an editorial, the liberal Haaretz condemned Mr Lieberman’s “shamefully bullying approach” and called for him to be sacked.

The initiative for the convention came from the tourism organization of the Tel Aviv Municipality, and the homosexual movement in Israel.

Clinton’s statement was interpreted by observers as a slight hardening of the US position on settlements, in line with the wishes of Arab countries.

The Forum for the Future brought together representatives of Middle Eastern, North African and industrialized countries.

I hope that this is placed front and center on the special UNHRC session today as the severe human rights violation it must be. Dancing by Jews in the area of the Temple Mount should be criminalized, of course, because (like their walking, prayer, meditation and breathing) it antagonizes a billion Muslims.

By definition, anything that Arabs or Muslims find offensive must be, in fact, illegal. That is certainly the premise behind the UNHRC, which seems dedicated to the elimination of just one such instance of this offensiveness

Throughout the events on the Temple Mount over the past couple of weeks, there was plenty of incitement by Palestinian Arab clerics like Sheikh Tamimi and Sheikh Raed Salah, who publicly claim daily that Israel is planning to divide and destroy the Temple Mount.

EGYPT: Sheikh Yusuf al Qaradawi calls for ‘Friday of anger’ against Al Aqsa violations

The head of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, Yusuf Al Qaradawi, is urging Egyptians to turn this Friday into a nationwide day of anger against the “Israeli practices at the Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.”

The outspoken cleric is famous for once calling Jews a profligate, cunning and arrogant band of people. He has long been in support of Palestinian suicide bombers and previously said that the Holocaust was God’s punishment to Jews for their corruption.

Qaradawi wasn’t the only cleric to criticize Arab regimes for their “passiveness” against “Israeli violations.” A number of religious scholars said that the Arab and Muslim world should rush to defend the sacred Aqsa from repeated “Zionist assaults.”

Report: Israel Knows Exactly Where Shalit Is

A report in the London-based Arabic daily ash-Sharq al-Awsat, quoting Israeli officials, says that the IDF knows “exactly” where kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit is being held, and that the location is under constant Israeli surveillance. Hamas is aware that Israel knows where Shalit is being held, the report said, quoting an Israeli source.

The reason Israel has withheld from rescuing Shalit, the report said, is because of a fear that Hamas will kill the soldier if Israel attempts to rescue him. The site where Shalit is being held is surrounded by explosives, which will be set off remotely if IDF soldiers get too close, the source said, citing the murder of another IDF captive, Nachson Wachsman, who was killed when Israeli soldiers tried to rescue him in 1994.
